Whenever I see one of those "10 most beautiful states" lists, I always wonder which eastern state they'll put in for affirmative-action purposes.

"Look at these TREES!! Wow!! Preeeeety cool, huh?!"

They should be spectacular when looked at in the context of the nation. Cuyahoga valley is a nice place but there are 100s of more scenic places in the west. The problem is, it really is one of the top places in the east so they have to make it into a national park, which degrades not only the national park system but also makes Cuyahoga valley into a bit of a laughing stock, and it doesn't deserve that

But to be an NP it has to be large and awe-inspiring. Everglades counts, for me.

a "Monument":

National monuments. National monuments are the only units in the National Park System that may be established by the President, although they may also be established by Congress.4 Most of the park system's 80 national monuments are smaller and less diverse than national parks, often preserving a single significant resource rather than a variety of natural and historical attractions.5 Beyond this, it is difficult to classify their attractions; many contain historical or archeological artifacts, but others are notable for their natural features or recreational opportunities. Many national monuments originally proclaimed by Presidents have subsequently been redesignated by Congress as national historic sites, national parks, or other types of units.
