You see him as opportunistic and blandly autistic, and others (maybe you too) see him as dull and lacking charisma. And sure, he's got stubborn working class prole mick stamped all over his face.
I'll be blunt. I run a company. Ok, I help run a company. I measure people by what they can deliver. Hawley is good with ideas and commitment to beliefs, but that's not the same as delivering results. DeSantis doesn't talk much, fair enough, he doesn't have the charisma that even Hawley has in his own conservative nerdy way that I do respect, but of all these prospective candidates, DeSantis is the one who's delivered and shows the best capacity of going after and getting outcomes. That's why certain people are watching him. That's why certain Democratic figures are panicking over DeSantis, not Hawley.
The difference between Hawley and DeSantis is Hawley likes to argue big ideas and he will have clashes with Democrats, face to face. DeSantis? He's the guy who'll just ignore the Democrats, then quietly steamroll right over them - from their backs, when they don't see it coming because they're expecting to be arguing with him face to face.
Normally I wouldn't prefer that method of governing. I love the idea of different view arguing with each other in the legislative chambers and coming to a consensus, but it isn't the 1980s-1990s any more. The left has gone too far in capturing control of institutions and the bureaucracies, and we need something hard to push it back to the middle ground. And ideally enough to the right as the inevitable mini-reaction will only settle on the middle ground rather than back to the left. I don't think Hawley or any of the other names are the ones who can do it. But I do think DeSantis has a real chance at it.
FYI stubborn working class prole mick can be a compliment sometimes.

I’ve spent my entire career at law firms with 1500+ lawyers and megacorps with 50k+ employees. In large organizations the key to personal success and the success of the projects you work on is the ability to influence well beyond your actual authority, to resort to the consultant lingo cliche. But it’s true. There are SVPs at megacorps who are sidelined and irrelevant or more often seen as just a functionary of someone who really matters and makes decisions. Then there are people who actually run shit. The other obscenely abused cliche—“smartest guy in the room”—exists for the same reason. You change a big complex organization by winning over people who 1) think you are smart and have vision and 2) are scared to go against you. DeSantis has 2) but his autism and obesity make 1) impossible for him. DeSantis did what he did as the pandemic gov of FL because he was handed a trifecta. The second he loses his trifecta he isn’t going to do shit. As POTUS he would almost certainly have to deal with a Dem house of Congress at some point and will always have to handle the press. Constantly bleating “fake news” and “enemy of the people” was enough for Trump because no one expects him to have any bigger vision. His vision was basically calling out “this system is so fucked that 2/3rds of this country hates immigration and no politician will speak for them. Well here I am and I hate immigrants.” DeSantis would need to do a lot more, and though I am sure he’s capable of far more than Trump I am also sure he won’t be able to do jackshit if he doesn’t have full control of every lever of power and that’s highly doubtful. De Santis for over two years now has massively changed my life and the lives of 21 million floridians, not to mention all you fags who vacationed here during covid.
After a few weeks of cautious proceedings, FL opened back up. I didnt have to facediaper, my kid went to school, played sports, we went to the beach, were on the water all the time, went to the gym, dined out normally, my business stayed open and made money, we were not subjected to massive vax propaganda campaigns.
This was not just political theater. He effectively saved my life from real pain. My NYC family would come down and marvel.
And that's just me -- a bald lawyer. My kid is young and small and vulnerable and De Santis saved two years of his childhood.
Not to mention setting a culture where my kid's teachers are slightly afraid to be fags in class.
He's done all this, of course, while never collecting an income tax from me.
What are Hawley's concrete achievements that would make you knock on doors for him, but you would hold your nose about de Santis? Who gives af about their iq |
