Some have suggested these are worthless in the face of Russian air defenses, but that doesn't appear to be the case:

Next to worthless =/= worthless. The life expectancy of a MALE drone over Ukraine is about 30-40 minutes. They do soak up missiles and this is a war of attrition.

What's the deal with Ukraine getting 152 mm artillery shells for its Russian guns? Do they literally have no suppliers? Seems like someone in the West could build them- how hard is it to make an artillery shell?

The Bulgarians could make them but the pro-US party just got toppled and a pro-Russian government took over and ended all supplies. All remaining 152mm stocks are dry. Poland and the Czechs no longer make 152mm ammo. Only Bulgaria could supply it and they won’t.

Soviet junk has always been second-rate, everyone in the eastern bloc except ukraine due to russian influence switched to nato gear. China is the only other major manufacturer of soviet junk besides russia, and Chinese equipment is even more substandard than the original soviet standard.

NATO equipment has always been more expensive due to the quality focus whereas Soviet equipment has always been cheaper due to the quantity focus.

More like the USSR and modern Russia are demonetized garrison state economies where you can’t put a dollar value on weapons because they aren’t paid for in dollars or even in circulating rubles. When people tried to setup production of chromed AKs in the US they quickly found that it costs like 400% more to manufacture an AK than an M4 or M16. The stampings are garishly more expensive. The M777 howitzer is classic example of a “quality” US platform. They melt after 1/3 the shells cycled through a Soviet MSTA. They brake after one month of use. The Ukrops hate the things.

Yeah, I never see an actual cite to these reports about M777 durability problems. The M777 has been in service for 20+ years, and a number of countries have tried them out and ordered more - see below with Canada. If just firing the weapon wore it out then other nations would have picked up on that by now and stopped ordering them.

Canada

In December 2005, 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, conducted an inaugural firing of its first 155 mm M777 towed howitzers, for a total of six guns.

They proved so successful that an order for an additional six guns was placed with BAE. In May 2009, the Canadian government ordered a further 25 M777s, bringing the total to 37.[42][43][44]

LJL at this flame. Weapons purchases are political and the M777 has sold like garbage even in the US. The US has sent over 10% of its own stock to Ukraine. Ther are less than 2000 in the US which says how little the DoD itself likes the gun.

That's what they said about the Ukrainian air force yet they still have plenty of 50 year old planes casually flying into russian controlled airspace to bomb artillery depots. LOL

This is a sign that Turkey sees Russia as having a weak position; they were previously holding out on giving Ukraine any additional drones and and aid in general.

All Ukrainian jets got wrecked. Now Russia is wrecking Slovakian and Polish handmedowns. The Ukrops can only do 20 sorties per day anyway.
