Just found out my wife is taking my 2 younger daughters to visit family out of town. My older daughter is going to be at sleepaway camp.

So it's just me and the boy. I want to do something fun and memorable.

I was thinking a weekend camping trip in PA. Take a bike ride, do some light hiking, a 1/2 day rafting trip, make a fire and cook food.

Could also do an amusement park which would be easier and guaranteed fun. Something like Hershey Park.

I'd consider flying somewhere for cheap.

Would appreciate all ideas. Thank.

Is your son particularly into any sports? I have 180 memories of shit like flying up to Montreal w my dad to see a game at the old Montreal Forum before it closed and stuff like that. Camping should also be 180.

He likes to play soccer. Seems interested in basketball too.

I don't think he'd be particularly into sitting in a baseball stadium for 3 hours.

Also, my passport is expired, so it would be more like a trip to the Bronx or Queens.

You don’t have to stay for the whole game. That’s why it’s perfect for a stadium tour—you can go to any game between two teams that you don’t care about as much (though hopefully you hate the Red Sox at least). But lol at not understanding that seeing baseball in person is a completely different experience than seeing it on TV. He will be into the peanuts, crackerjacks, hotdogs and such for at least an hour and a half. Buy him a souvenir. He’s 6 so this is when you plant the seed if he hasn’t already gotten into teeball.

i understand the appeal of a baseball game. i actually really enjoy the experience despite thinking baseball is boring as all hell.

Knowing my son's personality, I don't think this is going to be that fun for him. Even if we stay for just an hour and a half, with transportation that's half the day.

I think our time can be spent in better ways and i couldn't care less if he gets into baseball.

I didn’t realize you hated America this much. You realize the Yankees are going to win the World Series this year and probably several more times while he’s in elementary school, right? Imagine what a goober he will be at school when other kids realize he doesn’t know who Aaron Judge is or why he’s a big deal.

there are some great nature spots like the skyline drive (https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/driving-skyline-drive.htm), basically a big park you go and park in to walk around or take a hike (mostly easy hikes, good for young kids, i would guess). there is a river and it is pretty, as well as a little downtown in front royal proper, with memorable stuff like a park and an ice cream place. there's also a cool cave with weird geological anomalies (https://skylinecaverns.com) and some civil war stuff since manassas was near there. it's an oddly cool place for semi-rural virginia.

Amusement park or water slides would be my vote. A 6 yr old isn't going to appreciate mountain trekking and alone time with dad in the same way he'll appreciate go-karts or a roller coaster. Actually might be too young for that too.

I'd do water park. There are more opportunities for fun interaction than in an amusement park, and you have the option of chilling at a pool or similar if he gets fed up. Don't expect him to do too much in one day.

I’m assuming you don’t have to work or can work remotely and not very much? If so this is the perfect opportunity for a baseball park tour, closer ones like Fenway, Three Rivers (or whatever it’s called now), Camden Yards, like 3-4 total. In between: camping, biking, hiking, kayak/canoe/white water rafting in between, national parks. I would also take my kid to the movies a lot bc we love that shit. 6 is a little too young for a lot of stuff but he will just be so psyched to have 100% of your attention and you’re best bet is to keep it relatively simple. He will still talk about this trip when he graduates from college.

(autistic guy with dumb kids)

I went to the utter dump that was Memorial Stadium as a six year old and Eddie Murray hit a homer to win the game in the 8th or 9th. Was amazing and I insisted on playing baseball the following spring. Next summer was the 86 Mets who became my favorite team bc you can bandwagon without guilt when you’re 7, and my sisters’ roommate at college was from Long Island and she was buying me pennants and posters and we watched part of the playoffs together. Kids that age have their minds blown by the size of the crowd and the spectacle. Your autistic ass might not be able to understand that but it’s true.

Get up early and take him into the City. Get breakfast. Then American Museum of Natural History. Then come home. Camp out in the backyard or something that night. Wake up the next morning and you can still get all of your weekend chores done before the ladies get home.

You've got to be strategic. Don't go someplace far away if you just have a weekend. Plan for a very busy Saturday and a no-commute, chill day Sunday. Pennsylvania is too far.

It’s great bonding time. Kid gets to see the commute, feel the people, smell the smells, and let’s not forget, feel the energy emanating from the sidewalks.

And he gets to have his dad there showing it all to him.

It’s magical.

dupa wants a special activity - better to take him to Niagara falls than this. the kid will do this same trip 50 times. no idea why tourists come into town and wander around central park when they have real parks and forests where they live.

MFH is a total shithole right now anyway. bringing some kid into penn station to get harrased by piss soaked homeless is child abuse.

Flying is a fucking torture right now, no way I'd leave my whole plans up to United or American delivering on their promise.

Camping would be my vote. Rafting is a ton of fun. Fishing is great with your kid. Hire a guide if you don't know what you're doing. Cook hot dogs, s'mores, sleep in a tent. 180 father son time.

Hershey Park is great for kids. If you're in Jersey you might be closer to Dorney Park, which also has a water park attached. I was only there once, though, like 20 years ago.

Sesame place is more kid themed, your boy would probably love it.

Dorney is a great idea.

Here's what i'm thinking.

Friday afternoon we drive out to a campground in the Jim Thorpe/Lehighton area.

Saturday we spend doing some outdoors activities: hiking, boating, fishing, bike riding etc. Make a fire and dinner, sleep in a tent. Have some real father son bonding time.

Sunday we go to Dorney Park/Wildwater Kingdom which is only like a 40 min drive.

Seems like i'd be maximizing the experience.

Sounds awesome. He'll obviously be too small for the big rides are Dorney but the water park should be 180. Maybe check the weather first, gonna suck if you're camping in the rain.

Don't sleep on sesame place in the future, my kids love it.

taking kids to amusement parts is exhausting. I dont know how people do this and find it enjoyable. kids're always on the verge of a full blown meltdown. but it is a good thing to do with one child, and the height limits are enforced so you don't have to be the bad guy in that area

take him to hang out with one of the 6 year olds whose family you helped tear apart this month (there probably are several to pick from). the mother probably regrets her decision and thinks you are a reprehensible piece of shit who talked her into going forward with the divorce just to make a few thousand bucks but is also so tired and depressed and teetering on suicide that she'll let just about anyone babysit her kid. the kid likely is already feeling abandoned and has begun the process of regressing socially and academically. Maybe a few hours to play with another kid who doesn't refer to him as "that kid from the broken home" will help even slightly with that and it would be a nice positive thing for both of you.

or just take him to a faggy soccer game then go eat ice cream you fat shitlib sack of shit.

you literally dont have to do anything with a 6 year old other than be with him all day. Make him a good dinner, then later read him a story or watch a movie with popcorn and Mountain Dew with ice and a straw, and you will literally be his favorite parent until he turns 13 at which point he will shape-shift and become a demon

Just go take him fishing for sunfish and stay overnight in a tent. Assuming you already have tackle, it just costs a can of worms, and you can even dig through a compost pile with him for them. Completely easy way to have an awesome adventure for a 6 year old boy.

I'm not a fishing guy either, but little kids love it. You can get everything you need at Walmart for like $60. Go take him up somewhere in the Adirondacks to camp and fish.

Another thing my parents did with my kids a few years ago was to stay in some massive RV park on Lake George. Kids loved it and still talk about that trip.

1. Camping with shooting and fishing. Take him fishing (easy to get poles, bait, lures) one day, cook for dinner anything you decide to keep, have a big campfire. Next day, take him shooting in the woods with a Ruger 10/22 and a brick of .22 lr ammo. Will be a great time. edit: if you don't want to shoot an actual gun, gibberish's BB gun idea is 180.

2. Amusement park or water park.
