Blacks currently vote overwhelmingly Dem. When election time comes, this fact makes the job of Dem politicians and organizers very simple when it comes to black neighborhoods. Just turn out the vote. Have rallies at black churches to Get Your Souls To The Polls, send buses and vans into black neighborhoods to round them up, do whatever it takes. Just get as many blacks to the polls as possible. Because virtually every black vote is a Dem vote.

If blacks become bipartisan, it gets a lot harder. All of a sudden, libs have to figure out which blacks to turn out. This would require a huge investment of money and personnel. It might not even be possible. Dems can't afford to have the black community become politically competitive.

Their real issue is that Thomas "ain't Black." Blackness in the lib world isn't a race, it's a whole package of goods — you must be a good comrade and stay on the plantation to be accorded the sacred status of blackness. Thus reduced to tokens and totems and syndicated into a memeplex, the thoughts of actual blacks, live, don't matter.

He was taking Thurgood Marshall’s seat and was a blatant AA hire. ABA qualification was seen as much less partisan at the time and he got a “qualified” rating but with some dissenters, and that made him look shitty in comparison to most of the justices who had gone on the court in the prior 20 years. He had also been a judge for barely a year, was perceived by feminists as having gutted the EEOC and was a vocal AA opponent, so he came off as a hypocrite and a betrayal of Thurgood Marshall’s civil rights legacy and there was plenty of talk in the press about how much Uber cuck GHWB and his even cuckier AG were worried about him as a nominee. So he was already coming into the confirmation weak and this was a time when Bork getting blocked was still fresh in the public’s memory. Dems had a massive majority in the senate by today’s standards, but 11 Dems voted for him, so it was seen by feminists and civil rights groups as a betrayal and a disingenuous fig leaf of diversity optics to cover up for what the anti-Roe and anti-civil rights elements in the GOP wanted. It was definitely understood at the time as a nominating process that did a lot to worsen the already rapidly devolving trend of the court being more politicized.

The interesting counterfactual is if Biden doesn’t let the hearings turn into a circus and he’s approved more or less without incident, does he become as conservative. I’m pretty sure he does but I also think the left perceives him as bearing a grudge and therefore worse than he would otherwise be, and that’s probably bc he still bitches about his confirmation hearings all the time.
