I guess at the time I originally played FF8, my more innocent worldview made me miss the subtext of how devastating this all was, but damn.

The gorgeous pianist Julia is completely hung up on CHAD Laguna. He disappears in the war, and beta orbiter General "Fury" Caraway (whose very name even seethes with rage at being cucked) comforts Julia and encourages her to pursue her dreams of becoming a singer. Which she does, by writing a song about how much she still loves CHAD Laguna.

Then she dies in a car crash (the game not so subtly implies that she killed herself to be with Laguna, who she thought was dead, but who is actually alive and well), and their daughter Rinoa humiliates Caraway by changing to Julia's maiden name. She goes on to fuck Squall, who is Laguna's child, so it's really a multi-generational cuck.

Then there is the fact that CHAD Laguna stumbled into being president of a world superpower by sneaking up on a sorceress and pushing her into a cage, whereas Caraway devoted his life to grinding up through the military ranks and was forced to retire in disgrace.

It's really, really bad. It didn't register just how bad way back in the day.

Julia was saddened Laguna had to leave just when they had gotten to know each other, but he promised he would return after his mission was complete. Julia waited for Laguna to return, but never heard from him again.

Julia and Laguna's last meeting.

Julia was comforted by Fury Caraway who encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a songwriter. Julia wrote, "Eyes On Me", a romantic ballad about Laguna, and it became a hit all over Galbadia.

Julia and Caraway married, and built a life together in Deling City. They had a daughter, Rinoa, and Caraway advanced his position within the military to become the head general, while Julia continued to write and perform songs. Their happiness was shattered a some years later when Julia was killed in an automobile accident, when she was 28 years old, and Rinoa was 5. This tragedy became the start of the estrangement between her daughter and her husband.

I like the story other than the bullshit orphanage twist and the trite "we just need to stay true to our bonds and remember each other to be saved from the time compression." It was good up through the first 3/4 or so.

I hated all of it. I gave it several chances. It feels like there's no character development, no story, and just who gives a shit about any of it? Battles are terrible too imo. And when I went to Gamefaqs for help on the last boss, they all shit on me because they thought it was IMPOSSIBLE for what I said happened to happen. Every experience I have had with the game was awful. People talk about games being "rushed" when they take like 5 years to develop, but FF8 came out at breakneck speed after FF7, it just wasn't finished imho.

4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 are all solid, 8 is dogshit imho

I remember hitting a wall at the last boss (Ultimicia’s final form or w/e) because I somehow never upgraded my gunblade from level 1 or something dumb. That said, I think I kind of enjoyed the game despite remembering very little about it.

More time has been spent debating whether or not it sucks than was spent developing it. It was rushed af imho. They Lost the Code iirc. It's a fraction of a decent game. It's like 1/8th the game that FF10 is.
