Then for the entire month of July the only thing Ukraine could brag about was that a few 50lb bombs managed to temporarily disable a two lane bridge to a tertiary city no one had ever heard of. We were also informed that numerous counteroffensives were being launched to remove Russia from this shit town no one had ever heard of. Then we heard it was ok because Russia wasn't moving out of that town real fast yet. |

This particular war was yugely exciting because I got to watch Ukraine make all the same mistakes the US made early in Vietnam, and now I'm able to confirm the accuracy of my predictions. I could see all the news reports saying Ukraine was winning, but I thought I knew better and it turns out I did.

The cover story was that Ukraine did this with molotov cocktails and javelins, which was physically impossible if you looked at the damage, so you knew it was America doing the work. If the US had maintained that level of engagement things would have gone differently. But I never doubted for a moment that Ukrainian military was pure shit, because their propaganda showed how incompetent their intelligence services were. Their messaging on conscription was totally retarded too, claiming they were drafting men up to age 60 just as refugees were streaming into Poland. The one smart move the Ukraine military made was deciding not to round up conscripts, since they had no way to instill morale and would have ended up with 1/3 of their troops supporting Russia within 30 days. |

Both sides were heavily invested in the outcome of those negotiations, but one of the terms was that there were supposed to be elections in 1956 to resolve outstanding reunification issues. By the time 1956 rolled around however the US was deeply opposed to elections and refused to let them occur, because it looked like people might vote to reunify under the Hanoi leadership.
So the decision to go to war in the first place was premised on the notion that war was a better alternative to elections, since it at least offered us the hope of saving the South Vietnamese government. If you're committed to that position, you really do need to make it fast and quick. A long grinding war is no substitute for political solutions, especially DEMOCRATIC ones. So once 1956 had come and gone, and we were nowhere near military victory, we needed a new justification for being there.
By the time JBS became involved it was already a foregone conclusion that we were trapped in a long grinding war. So they were right in the sense that we could/should have done everything in a flash, but we couldn't have pursued that strategy in 1955, when it would have mattered, because we couldn't claim that nukes > elections in 1956. Furthermore JBS couldn't offer up a rationale that would have justified that approach after the Tet Offensive, because we were in the process of bombing the ever loving shit out of Khe Sanh when that happened, and all the news reports were "look at these huge explosions, the war is going to be over in two weeks." How can you tell people "bombs will work" after our embassy got raided in the middle of a massive bombing campaign? |

They couldn't silence domestic critics and the Russian govt ended up having to report a lot of unfavorable news just to maintain credibility. It wasn't like the old days where Putin could just murder his critics.
Ironically, what turned the tide was Ukraine torture porn and inflated body counts. The average Russian looking at this in February probably thought "wtf this is bullshit fuck doing this to Ukrainians." But then Ukrainians would steal phones off dead Russians, call their parents and film the phone call. To make things worse, normal Ukrainians would laugh at these videos and retweet them with laughing emojis. It only took about two weeks of this to restore Russian morale.
It also made it really hard for the US to maintain the same level of engagement, because Americans could see that Ukrainians were even worse than Nazis. All of a sudden it looked like Russia was telling the truth about these people and it became easy to sympathize with Russia. |

Russia's ground forces are weakened for a generation. If that is "sustainable" is open for debate but from Europe and the US's perspective it looks positive.
They are sending in MTLBs (slightly armored tractors) in lieu of AFV/IFV and are shipping in tanks from the 60s. That is weakness for the worlds "Second Military" not strength. |
