Am I crazy or is working from home toxic as fuck for most people?

I don’t think most of my colleagues do more than 10 hours of real work per week. Everyone has random blocks of time on their calendar and things don’t seem to get done as quickly as they used to. Also more people seeing therapists and complaining about depression. Doesn’t seem like people are getting any fitter either. |

i was a WFH contractor for years before the pandemic though so i know how to get shit done outside of an office. also have IRL friends outside of work so i'm not in need of job-based social enrichment. that's not a brag, i get the value of it. |

The post-COVID flexibility is the best of both worlds. I work from home every Friday. If I really don't want to go into work on a given day, I just say fuck it and stay home. Sometimes i'll go in at 9:30ish, sometimes i'll go in at noon. If I want to leave at 4pm it's NBD

that said, fuck dealing with commutes, shitlib coworkers you have to pretend to get along with, GC slop lunches, and fucking leather soled shoes you need to keep on your feet for 10+ hours a day. |

The entire point of WFH is that 95% of jobs are bs and don’t require you to actually work 40-50 hrs/week. That gives you plenty of time during the week work to go meet up with your friends for lunch if you want to and socialize, go exercise or do whatever else you need for your “mental health.” There’s no reason for you to be depressed.
The problem with WFH is that your boomer overlords in any traditional company, including bigtech, want you to put in the face time because they realize everyone is taking naps in the afternoon (theyre doing that too actually). They don’t want to pay you to dick around all day. So they’re only going to promote the ones who show up at the office. The ones promoted who keep hawking office “culture” will sideline those who are permanent wfh. If you care about your career at all, you will have to go back at least hybrid. That’s just the reality of it. |
