Edit: To be fair, I guess the Wikipedia page does show per capita income further down. But I have to assume that the denominator in the Wikipedia numbers is the number of people with jobs, not the total population. Appearances can be misleading, yes. But having lived and traveled widely across Europe can offer a few perspectives.

Living accommodations are much smaller on average. Smaller accommodation, lower bills. Higher proportion live in apartments for life.

Higher proportion don't own cars. That's a major expenditure out of the way. Even in rural areas there's a developed network of buses and trains, making it easier for lower income people and youths to not need cars.

Cars themselves are smaller and more fuel efficient and distances driven less than the US.

Consumer culture is less pronounced. People don't buy as many clothes or household goods. People buy with a long-term mindset, a sofa is acquired for decades, even life. Note: there has been some changes to this attitude with the arrival of Ikea and cheap clothes from China/India, but on the whole people still spend less money on consumer goods because they buy less of it.

People also don't dine out as often. Takeaways and sandwich shops are everywhere but going to a nicer restaurant isn't something regularly done by the great swathes of the middle and working classes.

More stuff is covered by taxes. People don't need to save for universities, except in the UK but even in Britain the fees are less than in the US. Healthcare is obviously another area where costs are covered. More discounts and benefits for elderly.

There are regional variations across Europe. UK is in the middle of a severe housing affordability crisis but that's not the case for the Netherlands or Denmark or France outside Paris.

I'd rather be poor in Europe than in the US. And even thought we have a good life, given the choice, I'd love to raise my family somewhere in Mittel Europa, either Vienna or Munich or Zurich or Geneva. The QoL is staggeringly high and just about perfect for this world. I still occasionally day dream about buying a property to restore somewhere in la France profonde.

I guess you could say the same for Germany with the immigrants, but the crucial difference is the quality of the white majority. White trash is a small percentage of the population there. A lot more things than just health care are subsidized there. Youre blowing 24 grand post tax in the US just to put your 2 year old in a daycare so mom can make enough to pay rent. Over tehre the mother is paid for 3 years to stay home and day care runs like 300 bucks a month if she wants to go back into the work force.

But attitudes towards the US have soured greatly in the last 20 years. It started with the Iraq invasion and since then the public perception of the US is a violent land where everyone cowers in the face of random mass shooting. The unfortunate tourist from Spain or Italy whose brains get blown out by a stray bullet is national news all over Europe. People are also less impressed by American consumer largeness.

Europeans are more aware of the concept of contentment rather than perpetual ambition. Ambition is great, it is necessary, it's how society achieves amazing marvels and accomplishments that benefit everyone. But American society does judge people by ambition and success, and I do think it's gotten worse as the country fragments and there's less to share in common. The only thing that's left is money and the pursuit of money.

The idea of living quietly and contently with family and friends, the annual holiday, a few nicer things, the simple enjoyments of life and defining happiness by that has a stronger hold on Europe. Money isn't everything. That's why people are happy to live in a small apartment because they know they're also spending a month in Greece every summer.

And America does nickel and dime you in so many ways. People can point to all the BMWs and Audis in Europe, which is true. On the other hand, if your European middle class isn't paying for private schools (except the UK) or high property taxes for good public schools or saving for expensive universities, they have money to buy a nice car or take a nice long trip to the Maldives. The UK does straddle both Europe and the US, with some of the American problems (higher edu cost, increasingly high housing costs) but it does have some of the European advantage in longer vacations, a cradle to grave healthcare.

And the other change that's also happening is Europeans and British are keenly aware of the culture wars in the United States. They do have some of it on a smaller scale but they still see enough to know America's gone from the land of liberty and freedom to a weird form of suppressive political correctness and thought policing, so of the other advantage of moving to the US to have greater freedom, however that manifested itself, what exactly is the point anymore? Google and the rest of FAANG and mainstream American media are much more censorious than the EU these days.

And the land use arrangement of European towns and cities do promote stronger sense of community both on local and regional levels. If you live in an apartment and don't have a car, it means you interact with more shopkeepers and transit workers and neighbors on a daily basis, rather than isolated in a lonely suburban subdivision and driving everywhere alone. Little things that may initially seem like a step down in QOL may actually, in the long run, mean a more contented life. And the last part is important.
