Tomorrow on the plane I'll finish a book called "Sweetwater Gunslinger 201." It's by a former F-14 pilot. As you'd imagine, it's a loosely fictionalized version of his time in the Navy. It's entertaining but very poorly written. I think I bought it back in Jan. when I was on the Midway and it's been sitting on my shelf.

in terms of prose, i really enjoyed the lesser read stephenson novel "dodge in hell" last year. it was long, but i found it to be surprisingly imaginative and interesting. would rec audiobook.

I’m very much enjoying it. He was a pretty scathing critic of everyone. A great writer. His life was pretty crazy. Grew up in a former aristocratic household that was somewhat broke. When he was young he volunteered to become a police officer in India just for the experience. Then he became something of an early Gonzo journalist, he he would intentionally do things like get arrested for a drink in public or stay at the poor house in order to write about it.

In the Spike, he was intentionally living as a vagrant in and around London as part of the social experiment that would form the basis of his first book Down and Out in Paris and London. The events of this essay are also found in that book, though the essay is not reprinted verbatim in the book.

I also reccomend “A Hanging” that recreates the execution of a TT turdskin brother by the white colonizer police.

He’s 180. But like xo, you can’t take too much of a dose without a chaser

Schopenhauer was rejected by all women, proposed to one 4 times unsuccessfully, and was extremely bitter and resentful. That’s hardly a wise man

It’s true that philosophers can’t be married or have children, but I don’t think they should all be bitter and resentful about it. In Schopenhauer’s case his resentment discredited a lot of his views on the subject. As another poaster acknowledges it’s hard to take him seriously on such subjects

Last book cover to cover was either the first volume of runciman's crusades or the first volume of shelby foote. Both due to xo recommendations. Both were ok but not astounding. Runciman too dense with meaningless (to layman) footnotes. Foote great when it was good but there is a lot of slow narrative.

I dont count audiobooks but have done a couple on ancient rome and greece and doing one on history of england now. I only do audiobooks at night to fall asleep or on long drives. It's not real reading IMO

Yeah thats my favorite by far. I read sword of honor trilogy and it wasnt nearly as good.

The army prologue reminds me of how theres also some line in there buried in the middle about how at some point he and sebastian would never go to college bars because like some paranoid servicemen they feared being spotted by fellow soldiers and ruining the experience of being drunk. Very esoteric take but very true. Maybe you had to be there.

Basically the first Xo poast.

A smart lawyer gets married and has a family. His career takes off further and he even becomes a judge. Only to be struck down by an unknown 18th century illness (likely abdominal cancer). As he dies, he realizes that no one cares about him and his life was useless.

It’s not scary and the dood sort of redeems himself and discovers true love for his wife iirc. At times it’s legit funny. Also very short, you could read in a few hours I think. We all need to prepare for death, it will happen (and soon), if you don’t prepare you won’t be any more ready than you are right now.
