Also imagine how incompetent the bureaucrats who approved the payments are. This is not hard to audit - growth curve was insane and would make a tech startup jealous, and facilities were claiming numbers of meals/children that were wildly implausible. $200 million in 2021 is 50 million or more meals. Even if you feed the same kids every day, its more than 100k kids. You should be able to go down to the sites and see the kids in line, see the trucks offloading giant orders, see the staff sweating in the kitchen. There should be massively visible community outreach. Its genuinely hard to locate that many hungry kids in America and persuade them to eat your crappy cheap meal rather than the crappy cheap food they already have at home or can pick up at Target or get at school (2021 was the peak year and schools were open for most of the year).

I haven't seen the indictment but I've read a number of articles and none of them really seem to estimate how much she might have enriched herself by. If she had walked away with tens of millions, the feds would be putting that info on blast.

There's some allegations of kickbacks but they seem modest relative to the hundreds of millions in outflows. Seems like she was content to take the 10-15 percent cut that her organization would have been legally entitled to as administrative fees if the expenditures had been legit.
