I was able to easily bench 185 when I was like 16 and weighted like 160.

When I stopped lifting entirely for well over a year because of COVID + kids, I was able to bench 225 my second time back in the gym. At 170 lbs.

You must have fucked neurology. Did you net play any sports or do any physical activities as a kid?

I also think you must not know how to activate all possible muscles while lifting.

Do you feel that you're activating your lats when you bench? Do you have any kind of arch? Are your forearms perpendicular to the ground at the bottom of your lift?

How much can you OHP?

That's stupid. The only risk of benching it dropping it on your neck. If you can't complete the last rep, just push the bar down to your lap, sit up and put the bar on the ground. If if you can't do that, just dump the weights.

Also, no need to train that close to failure to get strong.

A big part of the reason I consistently lifted from age 15 all thr way until COVID was that when I first started, I was immediately stronger than everyone except for a few really big guys.

If I was embarrasingly weak, I may never have kept on doing it after I didnt need to for sports.

i'm also real lanky, like it sounds like you are. i've always found dumbbell bench to be so much more satisfying and less risk of injury. it just feels like i'm able to achieve the desired movement on db's, whereas with barbell bench, idk maybe my shoulders or chest are shaped in a way that's less than ideal. if you want to continue to try flat, i'd try bands/chains/or a spotter to put stress at different parts of the lift
