One of the last years of that 129 body style, overall a great car, definitely will require some mechanical maintenance, but those motors and transmissions are pretty decent compared to their other German counterparts. Sadly, I am too tall to comfortably drive the 129

Depends on how long you legs are. My issue is my shins rubbing against the bottom of the steering column, and the seat doesn't go back far enough to compensate. Steering wheel also doesn't move up and down, only in and out.

>would likely appreciate

I am an obsessive carmo. Do NOT count on this happening. It might "appreciate" in line with inflation, but it's not an investment the way that real estate or certain artwork or a startup tech company is.

A very, very small percentage of cars appreciate at a rate that outpaces inflation. Also, cars that DO outpace inflation tend to be "trendy" for particular periods of time...right now, for instance, Supras and FD RX-7s and other 90s JDM cars are having a "moment," but it won't always be that way.

The cars most likely to appreciate are limited-run vehicles with historical significance. Particularly cars with racing history. Buy the SL500 because it's fun and comfortable, but don't buy it with the expectation that you will make money off of it later on (unless you count keeping up with inflation as "making money").

Neither handling or electronics will have improved with age. Safe to assume oxidation has fucked up most of the bushings in the front end, as well as axle boots and shit like that. But also the wiring will be crusty and if sat outdoors it likely experienced temperature and humidity swings. Then, if (when) you do have to replace something electronic it's probably something that goes wrong on all these cars and costs $5k on eBay because no one has made that computer chip in 20 years. One reason the old JDMs are sought after (I own one) is because the electronics from the factory were robust af, and only used appropriately. They were not as chock full of electronics as the Germans cars, despite Japanese companies being better at designing and making electronics.

"I happen to have grown up in Encino. It’s an upper middle class neighborhood, overflowing with educated, successful, sedate professionals. Mercedes and BMWs are as common there as Ford F150s are in Texas. Rest assured that this car was most likely dealer maintained, and mostly driven from the golf course to Gelson’s, to Valley Beth Shalom for Shabbat services, and occasionally to Palm Desert or Santa Barbara."
