The two terminals aren’t connected so if you have a connection you have to leave and go back through security again One of those terminals is way too small for the number of gates so you are just crammed in there with nowhere to even stand and nowhere to go and they keep bitching at you about where you’re allowed to stand
The entrance of the airport is on the south side for some stupid fucking reason meaning you have to drive all the way around and the shuttles to the hotels and rental cars take like 30+ minutes even though it’s technically RIGHT there, you just have to drive in a huge loop in traffic to get in or out
The flight path is sps and instead of coming in over the water like most coastal airports they come in over the hills and buzz the city at like 500 feet constantly because for some unknown reason they built the fucking runway PARALLEL to the water instead of PERPENDICULAR like every other airport (????)
One more thing their baggage claim is a fucking shitshow. Last time I was there there were FIVE fucking flights on one conveyer and none on the one next to it. Except then bags started coming out of the “unused” one but like 15 min later they never updated the sign to say which flight it was. This seems typical at most airports though tbf |

SAN is easy as fuck to get in and out of - it's a 3 minute drive off Interstate 5 and maybe 5-10 at worst to get back on to 5 during the heaviest daily traffic. The entrance is on the south side because the USMC base preexists the airport and occupies the land immediately north.
Terminal 2, which houses most of the carriers, went through an extensive remodel less than a decade ago.
The flight path lands over the city and back towards the ocean because, like every airport, the runway is built so that planes land and take off into the prevailing wind. This is the exact same flight pattern as LAX, SFO, etc., where planes also come in to land from the east and towards the ocean, into the prevailing wind. Note also that SAN's main runway, which faces WNW (again, into the prevailing wind) is perpendicular to the OCEAN a couple miles away, not the much smaller harbor next to it. SAN's runway faces 275 degrees; LAX's are at 250; SFO's main is 284.
During Santa Ana conditions, flights land over the water.
The baggage claim is no worse than any other airport. |

They don’t coordinate with the airlines, so sometimes during busy mornings, they have two lines open & thousands of people waiting to get through. The longest I waited was 2 hours (and missed my flight). I arrived at 4am, when the airport opened.
2. Layout. There are two terminals and you can only get to them by using the fucking gay Disney-style monorail which first takes you to the security/baggage area. You have to switch trains to get to the other one.
3. Service. It’s a prole mecca, and instead of at least being like LAS with things to do, you are fucked. |

No security, no computers, handwritten tickets. Smoking was allowed on planes - even cigars and pipes. Drinks were free. Meals were often quite good. Dinners came with a small pack of four cigarettes and a book of matches. I still have some of the matchbooks. Prices were mostly the same on all airlines, so they competed with service. Most people dressed up at least a little when they flew. Wish I had the foresight to take some pictures. I think the only lounge chairs were on some long haul first class flights, but the first 747 I ever flew on had a piano bar on the upper deck. In the 70s Pacific Southwest Airlines started decking the stewardesses out in hot pants. They used to have $15 LAX-SFO flight, with a $10 midnight special. $5 at midnight for LAX-San Diego. The Eastern shuttle from BOS to LGA was $15. You just got on the plane without ID, ticket, or any security. Then they rolled a cart down the aisle and took your money. The shuttles ran every hour or more, and if one filled up they would often bring out an additional plane. At some point student discount fares came into existence. Until you turned 22 you could fly half price standby. There were still many propeller planes flying, so flights could get pretty long. Without computers over bookings and double booked seats were common. Reliability was worse. Noticeably more mechanical failures and delays. Weather delays seemed worse. I spent 3 days in O'Hare once thanks to a blizzard. At least in the 60s flying was not as bus like as it is today. It used to be you would walk out across the tarmac in the open and board the plane up the stairs. Before D.B. Cooper most larger planes boarded and unboarded at both the front and back simultaneously. Many airports had parking right at the terminal. I remember when Dulles was international and long haul only. There was almost nobody using it. You could park right in front of the terminal for $2/day. Burbank gives you a small taste of what it used to be like unless it has upgraded since I last went there.
Pittsburgh had a movie theater right by the TWA terminal. If you had a long layover you could watch a movie. There also was a hotel in the mezzanine area overlooking the ticket area. You could check in and be mere steps away from the gates.
Flight attendants were all reasonably attractive younger women, many of whom were single.
I don't remember the crushing crowds at airports that we have today. Things were more relaxed. Certainly having zero security contributed to the pleasure. Fucking bombers screwed it up for everybody. Assholes. |
