takes like 10 minutes to kill someone with a heavy broadsword or other edged weapon, immense effort & energy spent. in massive battles there were people everywhere & soldiers wouldn't have had 10 minutes or whatever to engage someone. seems like those huge "battles" would've just become chaotic fistfights really quickly & be over when everyone walked back to their own camps

this isn't hollywood. even with minimal resistance it would take multiple (15+) blows to land a wound that would immobilize a soldier. and then finishing him off is several more stabs

"hanging" and the "guillotine" and the "axe" were considered a slap on the wrist back in the day. It would actually take about 1,000 axe strokes to cut someone's head off fatally, so suffering one stroke was really just a regular chastisement imo.

I think in antiquity and the middle ages spears were actually much more prevalent than swords in battle. I think the giant-sword-battle thing looks more dramatic so it became a modern trope.

And don't forget the arrows.

The casualties in the single-day Battle of Cannae (216 BC) were comparable to the United States' losses for the entire Vietnam War.

'swords' and 'arrows' are all hollywood hype

the really deadly, unglamorous weapon was the sling. imagine getting hit in the head with a gravel rock from one of those modern day high powered slingshots.

Most deaths back then happened because people got tired of living or were just plain forgetful so they either stopped breathing or their hearts stopped.

Most of the sword duels ended with both guys getting tired from wearing heavy armor and falling down. Then the less tired guy would bludgeon the other one's face with a rock

Read John Keegan and Victor David Hanson. They both have written a lot on the actual mechanics of medieval and ancient fighting. As someone posted above, swords were generally not the primary weapon for big massed battles, they were secondary to ranged weapons and pole weapons. The spear/lance formations and cavalry were probably the driver of casualties in ancient / medieval warfare .

To the extent swords were used, look at how the Romans used the gladius. I’m pretty sure that the Romans used the gladius less as a slashing weapon and more as a stabbing/ thrusting weapon. So they are organized in fairly tight formations, with a front line of stabbers slowly creeping forward into a mass of humans . Not a melee. The goal was to break the enemy morale and get them to turn tail and run. Casualty rates go way the fuck up when you bust the enemy formation and can send your horse to run down fleeing enemies from behind.
