People forget that AE has been owned by private equity since 2006. Every acquiring company has basically kept a hands-off approach and not messed with the golden goose. It is true that they've tried to diversify their product line and introduced shitty weird variants that you shouldn't waste your money on, but their classics are still rock solid.

CR re Brooks but it's a very recent story, not something a decade in the making. They were essentially fine under Claudio Del Vecchio although their sales were stagnating in the last few years before COVID because of the structural decline in dresswear in the workplace. You could walk into a Brooks Brothers store in 2020 and still buy a very high quality American-made fully canvassed Southwick suit w/ hand-stitching, for example. They were making beautiful pieces under their Own Make line (using American manufacturing) as recently as a few years ago. However, the company was acquired by Authentic Brands Group out of bankruptcy during COVID; one of the first moves of the new owner was to mothball all American production, which they've since marginally course corrected on but not in a meaningful way. All signs suggest that Authentic Brands is, per their pattern and practice, going to run the brand name into the ground or else zombify it to the point that it's unrecognizable and I wouldn't be surprised if Brooks Brothers didn't exist a decade from now (or was so different from what one associates with Brooks Brothers that it effectively doesn't exist).

I was in the market for a mouse and that's one of the things where I want to touch it before I purchase it to make sure it feels right. I went to Fry's because of its reputation and they didn't have display models, just mice in boxes. That's no better than online. I popped over to Best Buy and they had what I was expecting from buying at a real store, display models I could touch and feel before making a purchase. Bought from Best Buy but usually I just get shit (like monitors, etc.) off Amazon.

So Fry's was the worst of both worlds, it was the pig in the poke of buying something that sits in your hand online with the inconvenience of actually going somewhere. Not surprised they didn't survive what is the fucking point

As I got richer, honestly the appeal of building my own systems really diminished, a great computer is already so cheap these days. I probably still could, but the prebuilt stuff is so good these days there's really no point. The price savings aren't even that great. The manufacturers and assemblers have gotten so good and buy components in bulk that I'm barely paying an upcharge to just have a functional computer show up at my door.

Fry's was probably really cool for a specific moment in time when computer building was more of a hobbyist thing and e-retailing hadn't really taken off. It had to adapt or die and didn't adapt so here we are.
