We're heading into a holiday weekend in the US. Whenever there is a holiday, people will inevitably talk about it at work. So, here are a few reminders:

🍁 Not everyone will be celebrating

🍁 Not everyone has a safe, supportive home to visit

🍁 Not everyone will be excited to see family

🍁 Not everyone has the ability to travel or take time off

While questions like, "did you go home for the holidays?" "What did you do over the break? might just feel like small talk for you, they can put someone else in a difficult, uncomfortable, or even painful position.

Be mindful of how you talk about the holidays.

If you will be spending time with family or friends, I hope it's meaningful for you.

If you are someone, who has a complicated relationship with the holidays, I hope you are able to find comfort and warmth wherever you are able.

“I’m autistic and need priority boarding.”

I’m traveling to a conference and this is the first time I requested disability support from an airline.

Flying was always difficult - the lights, the sounds, the crowds - but I never thought to ask for support. I was concerned about not looking disabled enough. I questioned if I really needed this. Doesn’t everyone hate lines at an airport?

But I finally decided to go for it. I told my airline I needed priority boarding. I submitted the request for TSA cares to navigate security and even got this delightful sunflower lanyard which is an airport initiative to signal that the “wearer has a hidden disability and may require additional assistance.”

I kept reminding myself that while others might hate waiting in line, their whole system doesn’t shut down because of it. Flying is more difficult for autistic people because it wasn't created with us in mind.

For autistic people and others navigating processes that aren’t set up for you, I hope this reminds you that you are not the problem. Most of the time we know what we need but we’ve been told too many times in so many different ways that our needs are not worth meeting. I hope you make the ask for what you need

Team leaders and others responsible for creating systems, don’t wait for the ask. Be proactive in providing support and removing barriers. Do we really need to submit that form? Can this process be 2 steps instead of 5? Are your accessibility accommodations really that accessible?

I discuss all of this in my"Being Brave When You Don't Want to Be" talk so if you want to bring this conversation to your teams, reach out.

Yesterday morning the first thing I saw on LinkedIn was an inflammatory viral post about why the author thought pronouns were absurd. I could have responded that using pronouns saves lives. I could have responded to say that LGBTQ students feel safer when they have an inclusive curriculum. But I didn't. I didn’t respond. I didn't read the comments. I just blocked him.

There is a time and a place to educate, to redirect, to challenge. I'm actually really good at it. It's why I started my own consulting business where I do just that.

But this was not the time for any of that. Most social media posts aren’t. To put it frankly, the post was not worth my energy. Sometimes people tell me that they are surprised that I don't have more hateful comments on my LinkedIn posts about being trans and queer. The truth is that I do. I just delete/report/block very quickly.

There aren’t many places where I can almost guarantee the safety of queer and trans people but this LinkedIn page is one of them.

This is a place of solidarity for all those who have to work through extra challenges just because of who they are and how they exist in the world.

This is a place of growth and learning for all those who want to make their workplaces work better and subsequently, their communities work better.

If you just found your way to this page, welcome. My name is Nate and my pronouns are they/them. I will not apologize for who I am. I will not let myself feel any shame about who I am, especially from strangers on LinkedIn.

Today is the start of pride month. If you needed permission to delete/report/block anyone in your digital life, your work life, or any part of your life, this is it. You can choose where you spend your energy. You can choose who is worthy of your time.

Happy Pride.

p.s. Still don’t have a speaker for pride? Invite this unapologetic queer, trans, nonbinary inclusivity expert to come to speak to your teams this month.
