now compare michael jackson to his modern contemporary, Taylor Swift. has a random kid in Sri Lanka heard of Taylor Swift? maybe, maybe not. it's possible Michael Jackson was the biggest artist of all time. that doesn't mean the music industry is dead. just look at the numbers, rather than this subjective criteria you are pulling out of your ass

record sales are way lower, aren't they? that's due to technology, but the music industry now tries to substitute meaningless metrics like 'streams' (which are completely unverifiable) for traditional physical sales of records.

When we were in high school and through most of our 20s there were venues all across the country where small bands like this would play and a couple hundred people would show up even in smaller, lamer cities like Baltimore or Sacramento or Louisville. The headliner might only walk with $300-500 or so from the gate, but they could also sell merch and would usually boost their record sales a bit from touring. Bands like this could earn enough to pay their rent and buy food for years and keep slowly building a following.

I date the collapse of most of these venues to somewhere in the 2008-2012 range where Gen X got too old, the iPhone and the fuck apps launched and ITE happened plus new urbanism taking over everywhere. This period pwn3d various venues with fewer patrons and higher rents and developers cramming more and more strivers into every city and pricing out the younger, less boring people who used to go out to see live music. You take a place like Austin and compare what it was even in 2009 to what it is today and it’s so sad. In 2009 it was mostly Gen Xers still hanging on and getting too old for that shit, but now the night life in the “live music capital of the world” is just 500 places to operate your fuck apps and a few of the old clubs that have the energy of museums. Lol at anyone wanting to see a band in Austin today, other than bands that are playing at a several thousand person venues or doing reunion tours for their old ass fans who got into them in the 90s and 00s. Institutions like Stubb’s have like a few shows a month and the rest of the time it’s just a BBQ restaurant, and those are the few that survived when most died and became generic douchey bar #48539466 that has free arcade games! And craft cocktails!

I think you mean 1999 when Liberty Lunch closed. I’m talking about literally fucking Antone’s moving to Riverside in 2013 (though admittedly it was already a museum by the late 90s, but see a young Gary Clark Jr. still coming up there when it was still on 5th). And then reopening on 5th in 2015 with a fucking gift shop. One of the low key and wildly underdiscussed scenes in Boyhood is the scene at the Continental Club where Linklater captured all of this perfectly. For people who have loved Austin for 30 years it’s like the town is haunted by the ghosts of its great musical tradition and you can go visit their graves and commune with them but you’re constantly aware that they are long dead.

Lol no it isn’t. This isn’t even primarily about race and making it that is a surefire way to guarantee it never comes back. But what’s needed is a new type of youth culture with a great set of musicians who are promoting it that rebels against the wokeness speech codes in a way that makes hot young straight people feel excited and horny.

Those brown kids are perfectly capable of appreciating everything from Black Flag to Sepultura. And as opposed to the ultracucked white soybois their age, they also seem to actually care about having sex with human females. I don’t think they’re the answer but they can certainly play a key role in a new coalition.

this is exactly backwards, the temporary existence of something called a "music industry" involving things like record companies, ticketmaster, indie bands, is an bizarre historical anomaly that was dependent on a very specific set of technological advances and cultural circumstances. That moment will never occur again.

There has since been a massive technological advance—the ability to instanteously distribute music across the globe at effectively zero cost—that should have spurred a huge explosion of new creative energy. But sadly millennials are an aesthetically stunted, boring and social media addicted generation that conceives of music as a means of ironically commenting on their short form video content. I do have hope for Gen Z, though. They seem to be angry and lowkey/permanently depressed in a similar way to how Gen X felt in the mid 80s or so right now.

I don't know, a lot of "pop music" sucked pre-2000 as well. The vast majority in fact. Today the superstars truly stink but with Youtube there is way more opportunity to find extremely good music by no-names who would never have been known in a previous era

This is exactly the wrong insight, although this vision was peddled by internet 1.0 people as they proceeded to destroy culture. What we've actually realized is that, counterintuitively, creativity requires some degree of a monoculture both to participate in and to militate against. This has nothing to do with "millennials." It has everything to do with the enervating force of unconsidered technology.

I’m confused how you would describe eg Beyoncé or MCU then. But I think the point you’re making is that youths, millennials or otherwise (though they really were the ones that drove this change), have become much shittier at connoisseurship and that’s largely a consequence of a new set of technologies and platforms that create dumber metrics of success ie views, likes, follows v a rock critic still having the power to tell us that regardless of their sales or streaming numbers Nickelback sucks. Is it fair to hold millennials primarily accountable for this? No, but they still embraced it to a degree that was gross and obnoxious.

CR per Yanagita above. She was born in 81 so Gen X when using the correct definition, plus insanely famous as a teenager and married to arguably the most Gen X music figure other than Cobain, Biggie or 2Pac. Millennials claiming her, Brittany and the boy bands of the late 90s (all born in 81 or earlier) blow past the fact that those acts were produced by the pre Napster/MTVocracy/CDocracy phase of the music industry that Gen X built. They bear more resemblance to Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson than anything that happened since 2002 when the iPod first launched and all the younger Gen X and Older Millennials first got them.

You also ignored Taylor Swift who is a bigger and younger artist also putting out new music and selling out arenas. The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, BTS, etc. You probably hate or don’t get the appeal but these are all massive tours

Yes these are the artists of millennials.

Taylor Swift ie reheated 90s girlfolk that would’ve sounded totally at home at Lilith Fair except she’s too conventionally attractive, so she would need a nose ring like Jewel. But she’s essentially a thinner less curvy Jewel with even more boring music for 10+ years that sustains her q rating by being a constant source of tabloid and Twitter drama. She eventually hires Swedish producers to make her some generic pop hits bc she wants to ramp up her beef with Katy Perry.

The Weeknd I do enjoy but he’s pretty blatantly just doing MJ and Prince imitations. Starboy is one of the two or three best popsongs of the post Napster era, but you have to give half credit to Daft Punk (who are pre Napster). Also a Max Martin product.

Bad Bunny - ok sure. Admittedly not just reheated Gen X stuff and I am definitely not the demo for it.

BTS - literally Backstreet Boys in yellowface, completely derivative (as were the Backstreet Boys)

You left off: Bieber - same as BTS just totally unoriginal. It’s not an accident that he and Taylor Swift were spawned by YouTube, which is the platform that promotes the lowest common denominator most aggressively, but especially in the late 00s.

Rihanna - an original for sure but mostly a creature of the pre internet power structure.

Drake - did bring an original take/POV on hip hop but it was “max pussification” and in some sense just doing stuff Kanye did first more capably. Also was absolute destroyed by apex predator Gen Xers in wu tang circles when he showed up to Rucker park in a Michael Jackson jacket looking like a leprechaun, so Gen X justifiably dismisses him as a pathetic little bitch.

Kanye - probably the greatest and most original and talented musical artist millennials produced. Also had a massive boost from the same Gen X center of power that launched Rihanna. Was completely consumed and destroyed by Apex millennial succubus and ultimate symbol of everything that’s wrong with post Napster pop culture. Went hilariously crazy when he realized that he had ruined his life.

none of that is true about many posters

who is making albums or even songs that you remember now or that anyone remembers after a few months? Why do bars play 10-15 yo music w a small # of newer stuff mixed in, a lot of which is 5+ years old?

my parents still listened to some popular music at my age and could name some of it
