article doesnt have the full story. what happened first was that a zodiac "exploded" and caused a broken leg to some passenger and a medical evacuation was not possible and the ship wasn't equipped to deal with the condition. so the captain decided to abort the cruise and go back to ushuaia to get the person medical attention. this rogue wave happened during the voyage back to ushuaia, breaking the windows and killing a different person.

captain probably took the ship into unsafe conditions to rush back. lulzy.

plus, this is apparently a brand new ship. how the fuck was it built to be sent to the antarctic and not be able to withstand intense waves?

They were standing in an interior room in the middle of the ship. It broke the window and they died from debris.

wow, the captain was a WOMAN. this explains shit

The next morning, the couple learned that a passenger had been killed. The captain, Margrith Ettlin - the first female captain of a Viking cruise ship - made the shocking announcement.

several other ppl got injured too, and there was broken glass all over the ship apparently. word would get around. this is a huge cruise ship by antarctic standards (300-400 pax) but it's not some 10k cslg prole megacruise. word

Let me just say that a large wave in stormy seas is not a "rogue wave." That's a cop out. I'm sure this was just a very large wave and the Captain was neglignet for exposing the ship, crew, and passengers to this entirely predictable peril of the sea (i.e., stormy seas produce large waves).

A rogue wave has a specific definition—going in the opposite direction of the current or some shit. But yea I’m sure the female captain was negligent and was panicking in a rush to get the ship back to Ushuaia to get the passenger with a broken leg to medical attention and took the ship through unsafe conditions.

We are in agreement. What they call "rogue waves" are almost always made up. I think they've done some studies and maybe, under exceptionally rare circumstances, you can have a "rogue wave" in stormy seas that comes from a different direction, but it's not really an observed phenomenon.

rogue waves are an incredibly rare phenomenon

it's overwhelmingly more likely that this retarded female "boat captain" navigated the boat straight into an oncoming storm at the worst possible angle

the picture of the broken window looks like it's 25 feet off the ground. that's not a "rogue wave"

does viking -- and the other big cruise liners -- actually own their own ships, or do they lease them from someone else? does the crew actually work for viking?

our antarctic cruise was with a small-ish company. they charter the ship for the entire season and employ the expedition team but the ship owner supplies all the crew (captain, officers, cooks, waiters, etc.)

That'd be a mistake. Viking Cruise contracts seme to include a forum selection clause that says passenger claims must be brought in Switzerland.
