Which is more prestigious? I seem to remember back when I was 18, lifeguard on a beach, NYPD cop bragged to me how he got those jeeps off DUI auction lots for $3k. He said that's the benefit of becoming nypd.

I don't think the interior space is dramatically different between a GC and a Cayenne (assuming you don't opt for the coupe). Either way, you'll be putting the bike on the roof or on a carrier on the tow hitch.

I'm not. That's why I have not bought a car yet, not much use for it. In northeast or especially west u could drive a certain distance to get to the base of a mountain for cycling. Obviously also could drive to a ski resort with skis. In Miami I can make it to the beach road along Miami beach without needing a car. But if I do have a car there isnt really any good park worth driving to. I could just drive to NY once a year or so and stop along the way with my bike.

I was alive then and my family owned a FJ60 landcruiser. These cars were not “quite popular.” We were the only family I knew in my wealthy neighborhood who had an SUV until the mid-90s (and it was my Dad’s car; soccer moms driving SUVs was unheard of until like 1995 or 1996). Dads mostly drove sedans (mine had an E32 Bimmer) and rich moms were all VOLVOPIGGS and poor moms had DAT CAPRICE STATION WAGON or maybe DAT ASTRO VAN.

Interiors are the only thing American car companies consistently get right. Toyota interiors are horrendous and Honda isn't far behind. People talk up Mazda but they all feel cramped to me. Their SUVs somehow have about as much interior space as a Corolla.

"I've never seen an american car with an interior that would justify 100k"

I hear this often but this is ass backward. Many American cars have awesome interiors and are super comfy. Jeep is a great example of that. American cars tend to have inferior engines and mechanics and crappier handling. Again, Jeep is an example of that.

Also holy shit American car service is awful.

That's not really a direct competitor. Something like an X5M/X6M or GLE 63 are.

I love Porsches, but the current Cayenne and all Macans are shit pure shit.

For an SUV that’s reasonably new, Toyota is always the answer. Get a Land Cruiser, Sequoia, 4runner, Lexus LX or GX, but avoid the new V6 hybrid sequoias and LX600h. Any one will go 20 years 250k miles without needing much of anything. JGC are shit and have been since they stopped selling them with the 4.0 straight six (and those rusted out and were shit build quality).

I don't have a Cayenne or Macan but they're good for what they are which is performance SUVs. Sure, they're not really made for the Rubicon but BooR isn't going serious offroading anyway. I have a BMW X6 and it is in the same category and I love it. It is good if I drive it in crap weather and it performs amazingly well with a turbo-V8 and will get me to 60 in under 4 seconds. If I go deer hunting, need to tow or haul I'll have the Cybertruck (niche previously occupied by the Jeep Grand Cherokee).

All the SUVs listed aren't competitors to the Porsches. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is sort of an odd duck in that it actually does try to play in both the performance SUV space and the utility space at a somewhat budget price. But unless you want an SRT you're not going to get impressive performance and the utility is just ok. Weirdly, my Cybertruck will do both better.

Cayennes and Macans are actually great compared to most SUVs. Very reliable, better transmissions, WAY better interior finishes, air suspension, decent towing capacity, 20+ MPG these days. Have you even driven a new Cayenne GTS? It’s the best SUV I’ve ever driven bar none.

Landcruisers are great but they are done making them for now and good luck finding a decent used one without an insane markup. Mileage is LJL. GXs are a good value, but on-road driving dynamics are SHIT pure SHIT top-heavy at 70 MPH and the v8 mileage sucks too.

It's obvious rav4 hybrid will last longer than any Porsche, no maintenance, and can fit more stuff and drive to NY on 1/2 cost of gas. But it looks like a Toyota and costs like a macan s with 30k miles on it.

New LCs (Lexus LX) are sps American made garbage now. The FB groups are littered with ppl complaining how their covid laborer built 100K rig is falling apart. T4R and maybe a Patrol/Armada are your best bet since they are still made in Japan

i'm surprised the wrangler doesn't get mentioned in a thread like this. questionable driving dynamics, too expensive for the build quality, easy to make fun of. but the thing it has going for it is tradition and purity: an american icon, better at driving off-road (or posing like you would) than anything, can take the doors off when it's hot, just seems like it'd be fun.
