If the question is which GOAT had the most dominant career, Bradman is TCR and that's not really debatable. If you compare his career stats to the league average in cricket, Bradman is the equivalent of a career .400 batting average in baseball or a career average of 50 points per game in basketball. But I'm not sufficiently familiar with his career to be able to say whether he had a "prime" period that was completely insane or if he was just ridiculously dominant over his entire career. Was his best year as dominant as (just off the top of my head) peak Koufax or Pedro? I don't know enough to say for sure.

At 20, Ronaldo scored 47 goals in 49 games for Barca.

By way of comparison, at that age Cristiano Ronaldo scored 12 goals in 47 games for Man U and Messi scored 16 goals in 40 games for Barca.

its true. his combination of touch, creativity, intelligence, size, speed remains unmatched. he managed to be effective at top levels despite having 1 knee and being 50 lb overweight. It's hard to see how CR7 would impact the game without his athleticism.

the insane output at a young age is pretty remarkable though. even if you look at his goalscoring in the Brazilian league when he was 16 it's just completely insane.

Some of the dribbling there is just ridiculous

pretty much every other player, even the best ones, try to dodge defenders w/ their skills. Ronaldo just dribbled thru them and they couldnt stop him

CR7 is one of the best, but definitely a tier lower than Messi & even R9 when we're talking absolute peak

It's nuts how R9 managed to completely change his playstyle after having 2 derrick rose-esque injuries in both of his knees and STILL won the Golden Boot in the World Cup in '02

Dude without his prime athleticism still managed to be essentially the same kind of player CR7 was when they won 3 CL in a row, essentially living off of his positioning/finishing

It's like if Bron had a Derrick Rose-esque injury and lost most of his athleticism in the late '00s, and still put up a top 15 career ever even after completely changing his playstyle

the Brazil '02 team was so insane.

without hesitation I take R9 in his prime over ronaldinho. i give a skills edge to ronaldinho but i think its actually pretty close.

Here's a good video comparing their skills.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmmN1vo80YQ

R9 had an incredibly soft touch and despite his size could dribble in very tight spaces and break down defenses. I genuinely don't think that any #9 in the history of the sport comes anywhere close to him.

By contrast, there are #10s I'd take over a prime ronaldinho like messi and zidane.

It's really a testament to how we shouldn't have children playing on large fields or anything more than 7 v 7 until they are teenagers. There's such a stupid focus on winning games and trophies when the emphasis needs to be 99% on skills and training.

kind of depends on the personnel on the team.

My preference is a 4-3-2-1, which I thought would have been good for the USMNT with Pulisic and Reyna playing winger and Weah up front. Midfield held down by Adams, Mckennie and Musah. Ream, Zimmerman, Dest and i forget who else in the back.

Most prestigious i guess is 4-4-2. i got absolutely torched on here years ago for saying i played stopper, which I did. Sure its a dated term, but was a common position 20 years ago. I was always most comfortable in a #6 type position. Depending on the team I also played a #7. At the very end of my competitive soccer career I developed into more of a goal scorer averaging a goal/game in my last club season.

I definitely love the 4-3-3 b/c of the whole passing option thing

I have a huge bias against 4-4-2 though

I prefer a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 and I have a huge bias against 4-4-2 b/c the 2 man midfield just gets pwned, and while it has been used so much by lower sides b/c it can be the most effective in defending (Simeone's perfected the modern low-block 4-4-2 to lighting counter game), it is terrible in providing good passing options

Honestly though for a 4-4-2 to work in the modern game it basically turns into a 4-2-3-1 w/ usually one of the CFs dropping

Formations are a bit misleading b/c it's really about the shape you have with the ball, in transition, and without the ball

I used to set this 4-3-3 in FM and FIFA where in attack it looks like a 3-2-5

LB - LW - ST - -- RW

-------------RCM(Mezz'ala)

----LCM--CDM-------

--CB -- CB ---RB

Basically ahve one of the fullbacks drop & tuck into form a back 3 (could also have them tuck into midfield which is what City has been doing, you can pull this off in FM but until FIFA 23 the "inverted wingback" instructions didn't work)

Or a 4-2-3-1 where again have lopsided fullbacks so one of them is basically a classic winger, one of the dms push up, the AM drifts wide, the wingers cut in (basically Son Heung Min and Salah's role)

4-4-2 makes it easy to defend w/ a compact formation & press hard, but in attack you need guys to move in position to receive passes or just rely on long balls, and a lot of the 4-4-2 by the mid 2000s basically were 4-2-3-1: Arsenal had Henry drift wide, Bergkamp drop lower, Ljungberg and Pires pushing up high

Same w/ Ferguson's United w/ Rooney taking on a more playmaking role

Barry Bonds is the only correct modern answer. If you look at stuff like OBP, the difference between Bonds and the #2 player is the same as the #2 player and the worst qualified players in the league.

I think you can make arguments for Tom Brady and Michael Phelps for their ability to pull shit out, but they seem more lucky than great - its easy to imagine both of them having 1/2 the championships they have.

Shaq is probably the answer for basketball. If he was officiated normally and gave 100% of his effort, he was basically unbeatable. Instead they created new rules to stop him and he was never in shape and still won 4 championships.

It is Bonds. He was so dominant that even top pitchers with great control walked him rather than give him anything to hit. He also was a strong fielder and runner in his youth.

The luck argument for Brady is fairly dumb given the sustained run of success. But it’s outright retarded for Phelps. What is the luck element in swimming? Other guys actually could swim faster but a freak wave knocked them out of contention? Favorable wind in the pool?

He won that relay race by like a slightest of all margins and a few other races were close.

The luck comes from pulling out those races which were coin flips but also just the timing of it. If the Olympics are held in the summer of 2010, does he win all those medals?

Winning is winning, especially in a racing sport with no meaningful weather or equipment. He had plenty of blowouts and in the close ones I doubt the other guys were like "oh whatever I could have gone a little faster, didn't realize he was gonna be that good!"

Also you don't evaluate athletes by weird contrafactuals. What if the Super Bowl were held on the moon? Aging astronauts with the best spacesuits would be better than Brady in whatever shit he and Gronk could build! Everyone knows when the Olympics are (barring 2020-2021) and the top athletes prepare accordingly.

Bonds is a fine answer, being the best hitter of all time and all.

But your point about him being far and away above #2 is BS given that Sosa was #2 in 2001 and Jim Thome and Manny in 2002.

Someone above said Tiger Slam and that seems like a bigger spread from #1 to #2 for that run (I think Tiger won all 4 consecutive majors by like record stroke count at the time, like the most dominant stretch conceivable)

Yeah and Bonds OPS was off the chart but so was Sosa's and the spread ain't wider than the spread between Sosa's and the worst hitter (Cal Ripken's OPS that year was .637):

1. Bonds • SFG 1.379

2. Sosa • CHC 1.174

3. Giambi • OAK 1.137

4. Gonzalez • ARI 1.117

5. Helton • COL 1.116

6. Walker • COL 1.111

7. Berkman • HOU 1.051

8. Thome • CLE 1.040

9. Jones • ATL 1.032

10. Rodriguez • TEX 1.021

i actually don't think it's possible for a football player to be on the list. it's too much of a team sport.

yeah i think the difference for football is that the plays are so structured that a player's impact on a game is sometimes not in his control which is different than more free flowing team sports like soccer, basketball, hockey and even baseball.

i shouldn't weigh in on football because i really am not a huge fan of the sport.

brady never looked sensational to me. he's got a huge body of work. the greatest career of all time etc. but is peak tom brady the GOAT athlete of all time? Seems wrong to me.

Karelin won gold medals at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games under a different flag each time (Soviet Union, Unified Team and Russia respectively), and a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. His wrestling record is 887 wins and two losses, both by a single point.

Merckx and it’s not close. Eleven Grand Tours (five Tours de France, five Giros d'Italia, and a Vuelta a España), all five Monuments, setting the hour record, three World Championships, every major one-day race other than Paris–Tours.

TdF is the crowning achievement in cycling, yes, but dominating everything without having to peak for one race all year shows how much better he was than everyone else.

she didn't "fuck around". She just didn't dominate during her prime physical years because she had other top tier competition. she then had a career renaissance during an historically weak era in women's tennis.

for me she's not the GOAT. Prob 3rd best after graf and martina and would be 4th if monica seles didn't get knifed.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee scored 1,000 points while playing basketball at UCLA.

and, oh by the way, as of October 2019, Joyner-Kersee held the world record in heptathlon along with the top six all-time best results whilst her long jump record of 7.49 m is second on the long jump all-time list. In addition to heptathlon and long jump, she was a world class athlete in 100 m hurdles and 200 meters being as of June 2006 in top 60 all time in those events.

her records started about 35 years ago and still stand.

I don't think you give Serena enough credit, but I basically agree with you for the purposes of this thread. Serena's claim to GOAT status is that she was a top-tier competitor contending for major titles for a ridiculous long time. She was never as dominant in any one season as peak Navratilova or Graf, so she shouldn't be considered in this thread.

i'm not trying to diss her. I've got her as #3 behind graf and martina for lack of consistency.

I do think the monica seles piece makes it hard to analyze because by the time she got stabbed, a younger seles had emerged as dominant over graf.

After the stabbing, graf had a career resurgence and went on to win 11 more majors. If a good chunk of those were won by seles, i'm not sure how that would impact my rankings.

Any time you talk about "greatest athlete of all time," this guy needs to be part of the discussion:

Gretzky always comes up in these discussions, and he shouldn't IMHO. He was clearly the greatest offensive hockey player in history by a mile, but that is offset by the fact that he was a complete non-entity on defense. You basically gave the other team a power play any time you didn't have the puck. Advanced statistics say that Gretzky was about as valuable as a player like Ray Bourque (elite defender who was an offensive threat) or Jaromir Jagr (offensive monster who was a liability on defense but nowhere near as bad as Gretzky). And even if you only look at pure offensive stats, Mario Lemieux was on pace to break most of Gretzky's offensive records before he got cancer. So while Gretzky was definitely great, he doesn't belong in any "greatest GOAT" discussion.

99 has the most goals, assists and points in history. He also has more assists than #2 on the points list has total points. He was absurd.

Revising my answer to Roger Federer.

From Jan 2004 to Jan 2010 he went 15-10 in Grand Slams. He lost in the finals 6 out of the 10 times he didn't win. In 6 years, he failed to reach finals of GS only 4 times. Most of his wins are against the #1 and #2 GS holders and neither of them went >.500 in slams for more than 2 years.

Honestly it's insane that no one else said Federer yet.

Re-read what you've written. That doesn't read like a description of the GOAT. It reads like the description of someone who was "great" but also dealing with strong rivals who were also "great." This is one of the reasons it's easier (whether fairly or unfairly) to argue for someone like Jordan who just dominated the field at his peak.

Wouldn't any tennis player who happened to be the best at that time do the same thing? Is there a lot of randomness in tennis like golf?

I like djoker better too but he's more of a burst GOAT whereas Fed had higher peak GOAT dominance over a longer period of time

Peak has to be Usain Bolt. I would bet we'll never see 9.58 in our lifetimes, AND we won in the 200 and relays.

Career, obvious answer (who shows up 9 times out of 11 in the top 11 of all time points?):

For the first time since 2013, Usain Bolt didn't win a race that wasn't a relay performance. In the semifinal of the men's 100m at the IAAF World Championships on Saturday, the eight-time Olympic champion finished second to rising star Christian Coleman.

The former Tennesse standout and collegiate record-holder executed an impressive start to win heat three in 9.97 while August 5, 2017

Bolt closed in 9.98. Both athletes automatically advanced to the 100m final, which is set to take place at 3:45 p.m. CT.

The last time that Bolt lost a race was on June 6, 2013 when 2004 Olympic champion Justin Gatlin beat him in the 100m at the Rome Diamond League meet. In that race, Gatlin ran 9.94 while Bolt ran 9.95. Bolt has also won every round of the 100m at a global championship with the exception of the prelim of the 2009 World Championships and a false start in the 100m final at the 2011 World Championships.

i didn't post it in support of usain and i kinda agree about it just being running, but does usain's dominance even reach moses's?

"After breaking his own world record the following year at the Drake Stadium with a time of 47.45 seconds, Moses lost to West Germany's Harald Schmid on August 26, 1977, in Berlin; this was his fourth defeat in the 400 m hurdles. Beginning the next week, Moses beat Schmid by 15 metres (49 ft) in Düsseldorf, and he did not lose another race for nine years, nine months and nine days. Moses qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but was unable to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott. He did however receive one of 461 Congressional Gold Medals created for the athletes.[5] At the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, Moses was selected to recite the Olympic Oath, but forgot the text during his presentation.[4] He went on to win his second Olympic gold medal.

By the time American Danny Harris beat Moses in Madrid on June 4, 1987, Moses had won 122 consecutive races, set the world record two more times, won three World Cup titles, a World Championship gold, as well as his two Olympic gold medals. After the loss to Harris, he went on to win 10 more races in a row, collecting his second world gold in Rome in August of the same year."
