Virginia AG finds more schools withheld National Merit awards for “equity”

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) - Thirteen high schools in Virginia say they neglected to inform their students that they won national merit recognition in time for those students to apply to college and scholarship opportunities.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin called for an investigation into what happened.
Prince William County Public Schools confirmed that two high schools did not notify students of their recognition in a timely manner. Students should have been notified between March and June of last year.
The school system blames accidental administrative oversight for not telling students but said they have now notified 16 students of the prestigious accolade.
Four other high schools in Loudon County did not notify students of their national merit recognition.
Seven high schools in Fairfax County admitted that they also did not notify students.
The school systems say it was all oversights, but Youngkin suggests a larger policy may be at play at the school systems.
“They have a maniacal focus on equal outcomes for all students at all cost, and at the heart of the American dream is excelling, is advancing, is stretching and recognizing that we have students of different capabilities,” Youngkin said.
Youngkin said his administration is focusing on increasing education standards, which he argues were lowered under previous governors.
“This overarching effort for equal outcomes is hurting Virginia’s children, and it’s hurting even worse the children that they aspire to help, children in the Black community and children in the Hispanic community and children who are in the socioeconomically challenged community and Virginia’s kids with disabilities. They have in fact suffered even more and so we’ve got to turn this around,” he said.
As the attorney general’s investigations continue into Fairfax County Public Schools, the superintendent said she is committed to making things right and being transparent about the key findings in the school’s own review.
Virginia State Attorney General Jason Miyares said he will investigate every complaint and try to determine if any school system violated Virginia’s Human Rights Act. |

What they are all going to say under oath is that they convey the deadlines in a school meeting for every parent who is interested in the first week of school. Then they are going to say they have mixed ways about reminding parents about the deadlines and soandso thought it was in an email to parents on a mailing list and another will say they made a public announcement over the intercom *to the kids* (lol) and one will say the coach was gonna check with the kids and another will say they sent the message via a local relay system but only parents with iphones would have gotten the message etc.
Unfortunately, and it's a shitty situation, a parent has to be on the bead all the time because the administration is busy breaking up fights and sorting out bussing schedules.
If you think I'm wrong, just go pick up your kid at school during bus departure and tell me the teachers have any of that under control. |

Some conservative parents got disgusted w incompetence at the school or dropped the ball and skipped a meeting early on so didn’t get the message about scholarships which came BEFORE the results came out and when they learned that they missed the national deadline for the scholarships their kids qualified for, they called their reps.
That’s not to say it’s not shameful. It’s just incompetence because the schools don’t care about the exceptional students, only the pass rates. |

There's literally nothing to see here. Incompetent school administrators have been around since the beginning of time. Given the GOP's position on school funding and resource allocation, I don't see that changing any time soon. And despite the PR team's representations, there's no "evidence of intentional acts of racial inequity"-- it's just typical school gross incompetence and resistance to communicating properly with anyone other than kids from the same background as the administration.
Also, honestly, this is why you need a stay-home wife--they monitor all this stuff w the schools anyway and talk about the deadlines etc with their coffee claches so the kids don't miss out on the stuff the school does not communicate well. |

Parents can go online and get the deadlines directly from the source anytime they want. It would only be either derelict parents (unlikely) or ESL parents (more likely) who fuck this up. But the ESL parents I know with kids smart enough to make that scholly standard are usually obsessively ON all those deadlines like white on rice anyway.
This Youngkin thing is just political grandstanding in anticipation of school expenditure reductions, which is fine I guess, but if you can't recognise that, you either don't have kids in school or you are midwit at best. Or I guess you could be so partisan your brain doesn't work right any more. |
