i wasn't here for '06, but from doing my DUE DILIGENCE as a young poaster: there were a lot more law and law school threads, niggerthreading was still very experimental and bizarre, and generally threads were less likely to get nearly as many poasts as some do now. some classic threads were 30-something poasts. there are some old timers still here, but the cast of characters were different, and a lot of people seem to have changed. petro is probably my all-time favorite poaster, even though we only overlapped for maybe a few years, but i doubt we'll see the likes of him again. less despair too. there was more optimism, hence why someone like HAHAURFUCKT was edgy. that wouldn't be edgy at all now. we all know we're fucked.
'12 the economy had really started to come back. hiring freezes were over, and poasters tended to be happier. MFH v. chicago was still a pressing concern, and there were fun, weird schticks like "hey bros it's me again" that made most of us laugh our asses off after a while. there were still earnest poasters like even mountain dood, who ended up being a little nuts. we could talk about anything, yet a lot of us chose to talk to midnight cowboy about our breakfast every morning. it was an optimistic time after a dark one.
we (broadly, precis requires generalizations) learned that politics are bullshit in 2014, and grew into increasing cynicism. enthusiasm for trump was high for most of his first term, but nothing happened. by '20, a deep cynicism set in. many had become much more internet and even more ironic too in some ways. most youthful glimmers of hope were so long gone that i'm guessing many can't even remember them. law is bullshit, investing is bullshit, any form of governmental intervention is bullshit, medicine is bullshit, and god help you if you plan to buy real estate ITE2. we're all older, too, which both increases to the detachment and the cynicism, i think.
that's my summary at least. someone can probably correct me on the earlier years or poke fun at how beloved the WHOOSH refrigerator thread was.

180
I think the 4 eras are
1. PR-2008, the Poetic Dreamer/bel/JBD years (this Age ended with the Lolsuit)
2. ITE 2008-2014
3. TRUUUUMP!/Halford 2015-2020
4. 2020- Libpocalypse/Age of Floyd/Covid/Lockdowns*
To be clear, Whokebe/Jinx peaked in the 1st era.
I think most active poasters today came on during ITE and never left imo.

I think I'd probably do like
Pre-2008: PR / Mythical Times
2008 - 2011: ITE
2012 - 2015: Post-ITE
2016-2020: TRUMP
2021-Present: Your Title

Interesting write-up thank you. Do you think the optimism can return, e.g., could there be a chronological U-shaped curve of optimism so that perhaps we're currently at the vertex / nadir but there's a way upward from here? Or is it all just monotonically declining forever, people are going to get more cynical, more depressed. I find that the happier people are here the more they're willing to move more into the magic real / absurd / experimental which is fun; conversely, the rougher the times for an individual poaster (generally, and with some exceptions) the more the tend to stick to a very descriptive realist style of poasting

It's funny I have almost a polar opposite reaction to early XO although I wasn't there. I sort of mythologize it. To be fair, there was no doubt a lot of sophomoric and self-important faggotry, but it also seems to represent XO at its most, I don't know, literary, experimental, playful, adventurous? Maybe that's totally rose colored glasses and were I transported back in time 15 years I'd have found it to be miserable but from the documentary evidence I've seen it seems like a place where people were having a lot of fun with words and ideas in a way that is less present here now.

I think people underemphasize the criticality of the whimsy and when XO's history is written one day by someone, that'll be identified as an essential golden thread. It's one part of the site's secret sauce that often gets overlooked even as people are participating in it (or at least observing it). XO is a land where things are just slightly off in a beautiful way; the shadow on the spine of the book in your library overlooking the Park tilts ever so slightly in the wrong direction, this detail only to be picked up by that most observant of interlocutors.
