2. Matthew is quoting Zechariah here. There are various explanations as to why (including an error in transcription of iota to zeta, or the "Jeremiah Scroll" on which all of the prophets' letters were written beginning with Jeremiah).

3. As Zechariah describes, "And I took my staff Favor, and I broke it, annulling the covenant that I had made with all the peoples. Then I broke my second staff Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel."

Zechariah is providing a prophecy about the annulment of the covenant. It is quite literally Jews selling out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver for his execution, and, of course, upon his death and resurrection, he has fulfilled the covenant as promised.

Matthew is my least favorite gospel as a pure personal preference matter for a variety of reasons but you seem to be completely misinterpreting some of the most basic elements of the text. it happens when dealing with the new and strange. but most basically I don’t think you should read the gospels as commentaries on or critiques of Judaism, though I suspect you will have a hard time not reading John that way. I’d suggest you try shelving that reading while you press on through the rest of the gospels if you want to understand the texts themselves.

Just to take your second bullet point as an example of your errors:

Christ is not throwing out the rules. He is throwing out the fake pomp and circumstance while actually RAISING the moral bar. Matthew 5:28-29 is a perfect example of this. He is actually fighting for Jews (and gentiles) to follow God's law to it's full extent (in this case dealing with adultery). That doesn't seem like shitlibbery to me.

It's in another gospel but the best example to counter your second bullet is in Mark 7:11. Jesus directly attacks the fake rule bending the Jews were doing to get rid of their obligations to take care of their parents. Jesus basically said to the Jews "forget the letter of the law, since you are clearly bending it to your selfish and sinful desires, focus on the spirit of the law". Telling the Jews they couldn't just donate money to the temple and avoid taking care of their parents it not some law destroying shitlibbery

the Anchor Bible series in general is pretty good for more technical commentaries that will give orthodox and secular perspectives. some of the individual commentaries are much better than others though. and some are pretty novel not just technical (eg JL Martyn on Galatians is one of a kind). but if you want a line of commentaries you can probably pick up from a local library and will generally be “here’s the traditional reading, the liberal reading, the modern secular academic take, etc” that’d be my recommendation
