I've never been able to take Conor Oberst or his fans seriously. What is this garbage people call music? Fact: this guy has an awful voice and can't sing in tune. His fans things his atrocious singing somehow makes it more deep or powerful. It doesn't. It's literally just bad singing.

Secondly, nothing he has ever written approaches anything resembling concrete songwriting. There are never any cohesive melodies or riffs. There isn't really anything going on in his songs besides his bad singing and some basic chords.

Conclusion: since Bright Eyes is atonal garbage that cannot be called music in any way, I believe that the people who like him are the types who read all the lyrics and form a bond with the poetry, but don't actually have any type of ear for songwriting or melody or timbre, because Bright Eyes literally sucks and you have to print out all the lyrics and read along because you can't actually listen to this shit.

To be fair, the lyrics are also trash and none of it is deep or meaningful in any way. It's just garbage.

This is a dumb take. What other music do you have to listen to at the time but gets worse over the years. Afaik The Beatles and Miles Davis haven't depreciated. Who from the past only sounded good at the time? Great music is eternal bro.

there is some truth to it. music exists in cultural contexts and evoke imagery or aesthetics of an era. for bright eyes specifically if you were a fan of it it back then it just brings up imagery that paints a picture of the era it came out in and your own life, personality and aesthetic during that era that may have been similar to that of the artist or song. it doesn't get worse over the years for that person. if anything it gets better because of nostalgia.

whereas for someone who didn't hear it during the era it came out it might not have the same emotional impact. that's why if you show a modern person a Beatles track they often will say it's corny or boring. they weren't taking road trips while high to festivals to watch the Beatles. or listening to them on records after school in their bedrooms.

most of what I said above is about the emotional attachment people have to music that came out at a certain time and cultural contexts that they experienced along with the music. so yeah a lot of people have emotional attachments to music most people agree is horrible like women in their 20s-30s now with Bieber and emos with emo/screamo bands.

the point is that emotional attachment is an actual factor in how people perceive music, which is why lots of people don't' like the beatles despite them having objectively good melodies or miles Davis because the lack of emotional impact outweighs the music being technically sound

You sound like a huge faggot. 'The important thing in the music isn't the music itself but what outfits they're wearing.' Oh, the cultural context! It was what other people cared about at the time. It was like, the vibe. Fuckall whether the music was good (it's not), it's my enduring emotional attachment to a time and place! You're a fucking follower dude. Go vote for Obama or something because it's the 'zeitgeist' thing to do.

Wide Awake is one of her last good songs, with the exception of the recent Cry About It Later. But her true calling was in bubblegum pop of the late 2000s in her Teenage Dream album.

I think I can see why you brought up Wide Awake though, because it's a perfect put-down response to the obviously pretentious, contrarian and hipster Bright Eyes, as it's by a pop star who is usually derided for her music, yet has a reflective backing track and a sad emotional depth to it as a self-aware examination of her then already fading pop music career.

this was an extremely popular opinion when his music was still relevant in 2000s to early 2010s. I also shared it at one point but would still listen to a few of his songs. The prevalent opinion was that he was a pussy, girls liked him for his hair and sensitive indie looks and demeanor, and that he tried to seem fake deep with his excessively wordy lyrics. I think I remember reading something about him trying to kill himself many times as well and that adding to the pussy narrative.

Now in retrospect I like him more, even though I haven't listened to him in ages. Probably because of nostalgia. His music reminds me of an early 2000s indie movie like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.

One cool thing he did was get falsely accused of rape by a mentally ill woman who was lying and he had to go to court to exonerate and counter sue. He helped move the Overton window on believe all women, although men being falsely accused and having their lives ruined by lying women got exponentially worse, he was the bellwether. The sad part of this story is he donated his lawsuit winnings to victims of sexual abuse.

What about Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, or The Shins?

I'm not a fan of this entire mopey genre, come to find, but I think they're all more listenable than Bright Eyes. I really can't get past the strained singing out of tune and the total lack of melodic structure.
