Standard Downstate NY/NJ pizza is basically the same in the whole area.
There are some notable non-traditional ny-style pizzas though like Frank Pepe's New Haven Style pizza and Colosseo/Branchinelli on Long Island makes the best sicilians. |

Pizza depends on the style. There’s good Neapolitan all round the US because you can make it with the right equipment and know how. Gun to my head, I would say Motorino in NYC, Song’e Napule, or Roberta’s are tops in NYC. NYC style pizza—especially coal fired and slice shops—are different and much better in the tri-state area (including New Haven). Favorites would be Joe’s, Ben’s, Emily, Grimaldi’s, Lucali. New Haven is Pepe, Modern, and Sally’s.
I’ve only had Joe’s KC BBQ, and it was fucking diesel.

Good/fresh rolls and lots of good cheese options are requirements but aren’t an issue for any of the 100 best places in Philly. Jim’s always seemed to want to show off how pretty their grill looks bc the line waits right next to it and is raised to make for a better view.
Re pizza Joe’s on 6th Ave was the belt holder in my day but that was many moons ago. But I did a pretty extensive survey at the time and hauling out to Brooklyn to go to whatever place invariably fell short of Joe’s. But I lived several places in NYC that had 180 pizza within a few blocks. |

Joe’s Pizza >>>> Johns of Bleecker. I’m sure Di Fara or other pizza darlings in farthest outer borough are marginally better but not worth the effort and hassle to get there for very little improvement over Joe’s. My POTUS pizza place was the pizza place I grew up with, they were on 16th and 3rd but a few years ago they (((lost their lease))) and that was that, so Joe’s it is.
