going out on top is overrated if you think of the athlete's POV

the only time they'll find piece if when they absolutely know that they gave it their all for as long as they could. quitting a bit earlier just to satisfy some sport nut's fairy tale fantasy is dumb

i disagree to an extent because from the athlete's point of view, they care about their reputation and don't want to be branded as losers or embarrassed. they have to balance that with knowing they gave it their all.

“At the latest”?

Picking up another Super Bowl with zero Belichick and in a different “system” yada yada is huge for his legacy. Spending a couple of years at TB was brilliant.

Not that he wouldn’t be the GOAT POTUS anyway, but it just removes even the more implausible objections.

Last year was a noticeable decline, this year was a severe decline. They went 8-9, four of those wins were against other teams in the same division that were even worse, they only got a playoff appearance because the division system guarantees the "bad" division still gets a representative, then they got the shit beat out of them. It's not all on him, but there is a clear downward trajectory. "But he made the playoffs" also means less when nearly half the teams make the playoffs.

I mean he basically carried the whole team this year. It’s still a team sport. No one wins a Super Bowl alone.

That they even made the playoffs, with all their missing pieces, is a testament to just how good he is.

When they had a complete team, the two prior years, they were very very good.

Exactly and the same phenomenon in law firms. It's hard for Chambers Stars, Band 1s, to ever step away because their reserves are so incredible; they'll always have more gas in the tank relative to their peers and so even if they try to walk away, fill their life with some other competitive pursuit, golf, cigars, collecting artwork, venture funding, they'll find themselves staring wistfully off into the middle distance at night, thumbing their phone, starting up Outlook, randomly joining old conference call numbers they know by heart, putting out their closing argument suit on any given Sunday, always hearing the soft whisper of the law calling them back to the game.

He at least showed he still had an elite top end and made the argument for the ages about what would’ve happened if he’d had better training/diet/rest to help him sustain for longer. Also hilarious that we got stories like him permanently breaking Kwame Brown’s spirit and crushing any chance he had.

I think we need to draw a distinction between great players who maybe didn't exit at the very pinnacle of the sport but were still clearly "great" vs. former great players who hung on way too long and it became embarrassing. Brady could have won another ring this year; Krause fucked Jordan at a time when he still had another chip or two in him and when he played with the Wizards he was still an elite player. I don't blame either of them.

iirc Jordan was far from elite. He had decent scoring #s but was a woefully inefficient chucker.

But he wasn't nearly as bad as Willie Mays, who was a replacement-level player on the Mets.

?

Jordan was still playing at an elite level when he came back to play with the Wizards, especially pre-injury. Through that 2/7 game he was a 25/6/5/2 (shooting 420) player who was also clearly on the upswing and getting his shot back. Every team in the NBA would pay for that; those are elite numbers even if the shooting was a little down vs. when he was younger.

If you want to be pedantic you could argue that, fine, but after that injury he should have hung it up at the end of the season. But he managed to rehab himself enough to put together a 20/6/4/2 season (shooting 450) the next year, with some amazing bursts e.g., his 43 point game at 40 years old against the Nets.

Jordan with the Wizards wasn't "Jordan the GOAT," at least not age-adjusted, but you're kidding yourself if you're saying he wasn't still an elite player and he certainly doesn't fall into the category of "guys going out and embarrassing themselves."

Putting up 23 PPG on 22 shots per game (or 19 PPG on 20 shots per game) is not efficient numbers, and especially meaningless on a shitty team.

He was still a positive player, but not an elite one

Nah disagree. Your point about how shitty the Wizards were (and they were) is if anything an argument more for him than against him. Slot him into a better organization and he'd have more opportunity to pick his spots and you would've seen his efficiency go up. He carried that team for two years.

You see plenty of "high" scorers with bad efficiency on shitty teams, since someone has to take the shots. He basically turned into Latrell Sprewell or Antawn Jamison: good, not elite.

Anderson Silva is a former middleweight champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He holds the record for the longest winning streak in UFC history, with 16 consecutive victories. Despite his success in the octagon, Silva also faced controversies, including failed drug tests and suspensions from competition.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is a retired lightweight champion in the UFC. He is widely considered one of the best grappling and wrestling specialists in MMA history. Nurmagomedov is known for his relentless grappling and ground-and-pound style, as well as his relentless pace and pressure. Throughout his career, Nurmagomedov maintained an undefeated record of 29 wins and 0 losses. He retired from the sport in October 2020, after a dominant victory over Justin Gaethje.

Georges St. Pierre is a former welterweight and middleweight champion in the UFC. He is known for his exceptional grappling skills, striking accuracy, and overall versatility as a fighter. St. Pierre was known for his strategic and calculated approach to fighting, as well as his longevity and success in the sport. There are no credible sources or evidence to support the claim that the UFC is involved in Slavic money laundering. The UFC is a professional mixed martial arts organization that operates globally and is subject to regulation and oversight by various government agencies and athletic commissions. Any allegations of illegal activity should be investigated by the relevant authorities.

Exiting at the absolute top is overrated. Even if Tom Brady didn't win a Super Bowl his last two seasons, he still played at an effective pro level at an absurdly old age and that adds to his status as a sporting legend.

Just the last year, and he was injured and came back without proper rehab, but it was hard to watch. He was still the second best QB in the league after Rodgers the year before - 4700 yards and 39 TDs on 66% completions.
