Everyone who gets them regrets it.

It's absolutely retarded to get them if you actually spend about 30 seconds thinking through the long term implications.

And don't even get me started on people who are dumb enough to get solar panels as part of some program where they don't even own the panels and/or are locked into long term agreements with the solar panel providers / servicers. That is so retarded on its face that I can't believe anyone does it.

Despite all that, I considered it so, hey, if the grid goes down I still have power!

NOPE. If the grid is down, your solar panels also don't work unless you also buy very expensive batteries that also have their own shelf life. This is because otherwise you generating power might turn a dead wire into a live one and fry some lineman but still, solar is just hilariously impractical still. And I'm typing this in the fucking southwest

California homeowners get grandfathered into no fees to utility provider if you install before March, is what I was told. If your panels generate all yourpower it would only take like 10-15 years to be out of the red. In the meantime you're 0% reliant on the state's grid.

Tell me, how do solar panels generate all of your power needs in the evening? And why not, in your view, just cut all connection to the grid?

As people put panels on their roofs (and thus fewer kilowatt hours of usage occur), the base rates for the grid just go up to allocate static costs at a higher rate per KWh.

Edit: yes that's the idea, getting off the grid completely or I wouldn't even pursue this

I'm not nearly as anti-solar as most poasters in this thread, but battery storage is almost certainly not worth it, particularly if you live in a place with net metering. You're much better off just selling your excess power back to the grid when the sun is shining and then drawing from the grid when it isn't. If you want insurance against brownouts, a generator will be far cheaper than batteries. Batteries only make sense if you are either a far-lefter who wants a completely carbon-free household or a far-righter who wants to be completely off the grid.

Also, harder / more expensive to insure house.

Also, shit goes wrong with the roof in a lot of cases (eg. roof leaks).

Also, shit goes wrong with the panels a lot -- and when it does, the companies are shit at fixing (or will charge you a shit load for it).

Doesn't it take years and years before the money you save outweighs the initial cost? Most people probably end up selling their house and moving before then. And new buyer isn't going to pay more for stuff like that.

Real estate agents advise clients NOT to buy houses with solar panels -- and will often use them to negotiate a lower price and/or credits to cover expected maintainance costs, removal, extra insurance, etc.

Best practice when buying a home with solar panels is to require the seller to REMOVE THEM and terminate any applicable service agreement before closing on the transaction.

(PGE spokesperson)

Where do you get all of this nonsense? Most of what you have said in this thread is wrong, but this is particularly egregious. I have one friend who is a prominent realtor and another who is an appraiser. This is simply completely false. Typically solar panels will add enough to the value of a home to offset the cost. Yes, there might be some minor maintenance expenses, but they are trivial compared to the savings on electricity.

To be clear, I am talking about buying solar panels. Leasing solar panels will not typically add value to a home. But the OP hasn't talked about leasing anyway, so that's irrelevant.

Solar panels seem like a classic example of the government fuckign up.

If we cared about climate change, it should be a no-brainer than houses in the south had solar panels.

I'm not sure what the right solution was, but it's a huge strike against regulations that the system legislators created is one that is a confusing nightmare where teh industry is run by door-to-door snakeoil salesman and having solar panels on the house doesn't increase the resale value by $20,000.

It's almost like you can get better insurance rates if you go online and shop for the best deal from a reputable provider rather than buying from a door-to-door salesman. If you get solar from a reputable contractor, it should raise your home value by approximately the cost of the panels.

Requires you to replace your roof early if less than 10 years are remaining before you install, then you have many many puncture holes in your roof and thus many many points of failure. Then you lose the money you were loaned for the panels when you sell your house since the home value won’t increase a commensurate amount.

How often are you supposed to get a new roof? My thinking was this would extend the life of roof because panels are taking the brunt of elements like a shield. Also panels seem fairly modular and easy to replace or supplement individual panels/components once the basic infrastructure is installed/activated.

Look up how a roof is installed and the layers underneath, and how solar is installed on top of that. With solar you are introducing hundreds of points of failure and praying the fly-by-night beaners installing solar are sealing everything like they should. Protip: they often aren’t.

We got one that covers one side of the roof (previous owners bought and paid for the solar panels) and it's saving us thousands a year. Keep in mind this in QLD where it is subtropical weather. I have never once flicked the actually electricity switch.

What about the new solar shingles?

It seems like cheap solar shingles should be hitting the market soon.

I think I need a new roof in the next few years and I am thinking about installing about 1000 -2000 sq ft of solar shingles on the south facing side.

Solar only makes sense if you have the batteries

edit: also, the panels *should not* be installed on the roof of your house. They should be out in the middle of field away from trees, etc.

There's lots of bad information in this thread. It sounds like most poasters are only considering the shady door-to-door solar salespeople or something. Always get quotes from something like EnergySage where different contractors will bid for your project and you can compare pricing and reviews.

I am looking into getting solar for my house, and I probably will at some point. From a purely financial point of view, solar panels are a questionable investment (and they are definitely a bad investment if you don't intend to stay in the house long term). It usually takes at least 10-15 years just to break even. And when you factor in the time value of money, it takes even longer. I'm planning on getting them anyway partly because I want to be environmentally conscious and partly because I like the idea of being able to crank the AC during the summer without paying higher power bills. Insurance against brownouts is an added bonus.

In any event, if you are thinking about getting solar, get multiple bids from reputable contractors and run the numbers carefully.

Cr. I have 9.6Kw peak installed in the yard. Did not want a roof installation for all the above mentioned reasons. It's not a great investment, but I just wanted to do it. I have at the moment 11 cents/Kwh power cost and my panels supply about 14Mwh/year. They cost $26K net of Federal tax credit, so payback is about 17 years at zero cost of money. I used a high quality turnkey installer who did a great job. Not the cheapest necessarily, but a high quality installation. If utility rates go up (which I expect they will) the payback time decreases of course. We are 100% coal at the moment, and I expect to be paying 2x for power in 10 years if I live that long. Here's a photo of the panels: https://imgur.com/a/ix9rHmi If battery prices go down by a factor of 4 (unlikely) I would consider going to battery backup instead of having a generator.

As I said above, batteries are almost certainly not worth it from an economic perspective. If it is important to you to be completely carbon free or to be able to live "off grid," then maybe. But even excluding the cost of the battery, it will almost always be cheaper to sell your extra energy back to the grid via net metering and draw from the grid at night (especially if your power rates are tiered with day rates higher than night rates). And if you want a backup power source for brownouts, a generator will be far cheaper than batteries.

I have a large all electric house with two geothermal heat pumps for HVAC. It has 400 amp electric service. A whole house generator would have to be 48Kw and would cost about $40K installed with a 1000 gallon propane tank. I got a quote on a Generac system. We don't have enough power outages to justify spending that much, so what I did instead was install a 10Kw Westinghouse portable generator housed in an outdoor storage shed. It can run either on gasoline or propane (I use 5 gallon barbecue tanks). It has sufficient output to run essentials - well pump, microwave, lights, TV, internet, etc. and one water heater. It also has the advantage of having very clean power output - cost about $2K. We use a wood stove for emergency heat. It is connected to the house via a manual transfer switch that disconnects the main grid connection and connects the generator to essential circuits. Solar has to be coupled with batteries and an inverter to be usable for off grid backup. Otherwise there is no power at night and little on cloudy days, as well as interruptions from the passage of clouds. Batteries get really expensive. Storage is probably $750/Kwh and the batteries have finite lifetimes.

Someone in my family ordered the panels directly from China and did most of the installation on their own. They said they saved about 70%. But that was around 2016, I think. I suspect the savings would be less now.
