I'd like to see real scholarship on this question. I've heard things like "bankrupted by arms race" and "internal contradictions" and "inefficient command economy". What is the truth?

But it all went down so fast -- what really happened? Is it possible that our governance system could collapse as quickly? Why or why not?

Thank

The key point imo is that the soviet elite seamlessly transitioned into second tier global elite. Ie there was no elite replacement in Russia after SU fell. Real dissidents were embittered watching this play out as they thought they would be ascendant after the collapse - lol nope

Basically the transition happened so globohomo could rape the Soviet’s resources more directly after SU’s economic inefficiencies grew too costly

stagnant economy made worse by a fall in oil prices

gorbachev was incompetent and glastnost/perestroika failed

Constiuent republics began to agitate for reform and more local autonomy, while retaining the overall union. Ethnic nationalism rises up in most SSRs

Georgia and the Baltics say fuck it, let's leave

the "New Union Treaty" is drafted to save the union in some form (though without the baltics or georgia). Much more local autonomy but central military

hardliners get pissed off and stage a coup against Gorbachev. Coup fails horribly in 48 hours.

Meanwhile in the background Yeltsin is gaining power and influence in Russia. The local SSRs had their own local communist parties. Russia didn't - it was just the CPSU.

the failed coup shatters a brittle situation and everyone bails
