transcranial magnetic stimulation
empirically more successful at curing depression than any pharmacological option. also a lot more expensive which is why payers will only cover this if patients have tried four (4!) different types of antidepressants, for several months at a time, such that they are diagnosed with treatment resistant depression.
you go to a TMS clinic 5-6 days/week for about four weeks, 30 minute sessions. get your brain zapped a bit. feel much better. some folks go through this kind of session once a year, others every 6 months. the point is - it works and is significantly more effective than any other option except optimizing diet/nutrition/sleep/exercise/personal life circumstances

It is non-invasive neuromodulation. Basically, it uses magnetic fields to activate/deactivate parts of the brain.
A coil is placed on your scalp, atop the targeted part of the brain. The coil is a magnet that generates short and powerful magnetic pulses. When it is activated it produces magnetic pulses which pass through your skull to your brain. They are similar in strength to, say, an MRI scan, but a lot more focused/concentrated.
The magnetic pulses product a small electrical current in your brain tissue (the magnetic field cuases the charged particles in your brain's neurons to move thus creating the current) and that current can either stimulate or inhibit certain neuronal activity. Generally speaking, high frequency (fast) pulses activate neurons and low-frequency (slow) pulses stop/inhibit neurons.
This tech is not only used for depression but is actually FDA-approved for treatment of OCD and will probably be used for anxiety and chronic pain.
