History of Soybeans

farmer inspecting soybeans in the fieldWhere did soybeans come from? Soybeans are not native to Iowa, meaning that they were not found growing here first. Most agree that soybeans came from China originally.

Soybeans were grown first in America in the 19th century, and were not grown in Iowa until the 20th century. At first, soybeans were grown as feed for livestock (animals). Then, scientists discovered that the soybean had many uses for people. Then planting soybeans really took off!

You can find more detailed information about the history of soybeans on the Iowa Soybean Association website.

Soybeans Today

The United States is growing more than 76.5 million acres of soybeans; we are first in the world for Soybean production. Soybeans are an important crop for Iowa as well as the United States. In 2001 U.S. farmers surpassed a milestone in agriculture history by exporting more than 1 billion bushels of soybeans. Today farmers in more than 30 states grow soybeans, making soybeans the United States second largest crop in cash sales.

they are subsidized in a similar way to corn and an active industry lobby that invests in soy use R&D and favorable regulatory regime.

how am i dodging it? thanks to subsidies and industrial monoculture farming practices we have a glut of soybeans, and the soybean industry has invested a lot of money to find various uses for soybeans and favorable regulations to overlook the problems of overconsumption of soy.

GC Megafood companies don't care about nutritional value or health and are more than happy to sell soy products with big markups or replace traditional ingredients with soy products to increase margins.

more people and health-focused regulatory regimes in EU and elsewhere make this hard to replicate anywhere outside of GC hellscape america.

I know all of that. My question is WHEN did this occur. Like at some point soy protein made its way into McDonald's hamburgers. When was that? The 70s? I saw a clip of Mr. Rogers hyping soy products to little kids recently.

Yeah I have no doubt we hit a plateau after nut milks displaced soy milk and burger places had to start advertising they were "100% beef." Again you have failed to answer the question: when did this begin? Who was POTUS when Midwesterners were told to plant soybeans instead of corn?

based on a quick google search, seems like midwest soybean production really took root in WW2/postwar 50s, and by 60s reached a critical mass point when it became a leading ag export and soybean industry groups formed. 60s/70s was also when its direct consumption as tofu (as opposed to before when it was mostly used for livestock feed) and other products became popularized by, at the time, hippies.

so it wasn't a sudden switch, but a gradual process.

I think they are trying to paper over important inflection points by making it look like a slow, natural evolution. The 90s thing with "phytochemicals" was weird. That's briefly discussed in the third link. Though admittedly we had probably reached peak production by then.

Also not really discussed:l in those links: soybean oil. These articles make it sound like it's all about the protein.

Yeah man it’s crazy how GC is pushing us to eat plants for protein like half the world has for 3000 years. Better to have an army of $8 immigrants slaughtering factory-farmed animals so we can chop them up, freeze them, and eat them 1000 miles away. Love that chicken from Popeyes!

lmao@ this dumb fuck OP:

Lunch consists of chicken tikka massala and soy milk. Your firm has mandated soy milk to reduce the testosterone levels of all heterosexual white males at your firm. You look around the cafeteria and notice nothing but curry, rice, and burritos. Rampant inflation has brought the price of your fast-casual lunch up to $35. The waitress politely asks you wear a mask before entering.
