It was long rumored that Syracuse cast the deciding vote against Penn State, but Mike Tranghese confirmed that this was not the case and that Syracuse had, in fact, voted for Penn State's inclusion.[8] Penn State would loom large over the conference during future rounds of realignment as the Nittany Lions had the potential to shore up the conference once football members began to join. Following the decisions by Georgetown, St. John's, and fellow Pennsylvania school Villanova to vote against Penn State's admission, then-Big Ten administrator and future-Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said the conference would "rue the day" they rejected the Nittany Lions.

Phase 3 was 180 also. Notre Dame, Marquette, Louisville, plus most of the old programs (BC and Miami weren’t worth anything).
I lived in NYC at the time and the Big East tournament was a 180 event.
Quarterfinal day could have UConn vs Cuse, Georgetown/Villanova daytime doubleheader with Notre Dame vs Louisville and Providence vs Pitt night cap doubleheader. It was all taken from us by GC.

Almost forgot. I saw Richard Hamilton’s buzzer beater in 1998 live and I was just below the television camera with a perfect view.
I lived less than a mile from the Greensboro Coliseum and thought I bought tickets to the ACC Tournament but when my tickets came they were for the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight (I was hitting the bong a lot those days).
I’m a huge UNC fan and it was pure luck that I got to see Carolina play. That was the year after Dean Smith retired and their new coach allowed showboating.
Vince Carter was on that team and he did a 360 slam that erupted the pro-Carolina crowd. It was literally 180x2.
After Carolina won, almost everyone left so we moved from our nosebleed seats to perfect mid court seats for the UConn v Washington game. U-Dub had two 7 footers called the Twin Towers.
Hamilton’s buzzer beater is the GOAT March Madness highlight.
