The reviews say it looks "darker" but you can make games look as dark as you want with conventional raster graphics. Same with enhanced textures and whatnot. You can make the walls looks like that without ray tracing if that's the effect you want:

I've also watched some gameplay and the lighting looks like more of a distraction than anything. This is a puzzle game, not one where it matters what the shadows from the fans looks like. I don't ever recall being in a room and thinking "shit I wish this water had more detailed reflections of the rest of the room." This isn't even a game where you go searching for loot or even ammo. You always have everything you need at all times.

Jesus, they turned the graphics settings way down in the non-RTX version they show for comparison. I just tested out the original version maxed out and it looks great. All these moving lights in the RTX version would be a yuge distraction when you're trying to figure out where to place your portals. The original uses lighting to direct you to the puzzle solution sometimes too. That's totally lost in the RTX version.
There's also something absurd about an RTX 4090 maxing out at 60fps. That really is the best anyone can do. The game doesn't even hit 20fps on AMD. This is with <30% of the image being ray traced on a game from 2007.
