But 1) it also comes with certain advantages, eg it’s much easier to feel up your girlfriend in the basement of your house if you live in a 3000+ sqft house and your mom is on her phone on the second floor v finding a quiet corner in a 1200 sqft 3 bdrm apartment, and 2) given the alternatives wrt schools and crime in the US that 12-15 year old identity formation challenge is the best version of a problem or flaw in American family life. At some point, you have to put a premium on staying in one place for the stability of your family. That is a reason to buy. Especially if you can center most of your life around that area of town. Kids go to school there, wife works there, grocer is nearby, etc. If you are by yourself, renting almost always makes more sense. Basically, I view houses as a product that you can buy. SFHs are for families, and they are better than the rental alternative, but very expensive. |
