They hit the pavement right in front of the sluice gate where the initial failure occurred.
Separately, right before the dam failure occurred, Ukraine opened some upstream locks that caused water levels to surge, and there was some overtopping, but if overtopping caused the failure, it occurred right in the same vicinity where Ukraine was bombing. It's not clear whether Ukraine opened the locks to destroy the dam or just to try to flood Russian trenches, but in any case I think it's fair to assume overtopping was the proximate cause. |

That bend in the road that got bombed is almost dead center in the torrent of water rushing through the breach. Oh, glorious HIMARS! Notice there's overtopping along the entire dam but structural failure only occurs at that point.

Assuming Russia didn't deliberately blow the dam, of course, which seems 50-50 to me between that and negligence to me at this point. If Russia deliberately blew it then there's obviously no arguable shared blame, it's all on them. Not that blame matters in a war where they are sending drones and missiles against Kiev every night. |

If some guy throws a Molotov Cocktail at your house that burns a bit and leaves some permanent damage to the roof you fix the roof for your own sake. You don't say "some other guy did that, it's not my problem."
And you certainly don't decide to store some of your belongings on that same roof, which is basically what Russia did by letting the reservoir reach unprecedented heights.
Crimea is going to be PERMANENTLY a dry wasteland as a result of this. After the war Ukraine will likely control one bank of the river and Russia the other, so they will almost certainly not work together to rebuild a dam that mainly helps the Russian part of the former Ukraine. |
