how could such a small country produce so much value-add?

how can 3 in 100 watches built worldwide contain a quarter of all value on purchases?

Lmao that is hard to believe. What were the heavy hitter American watch brands? I know Hamilton was once US based but other than that who was out there?

US soldiers wore Seiko in Vietnam. And all the film actors in the 60s and 70s were wearing Cartier and Heuer and shit... I think maybe go back to the very early 20th century we may have been prestigious.

I have a Panerai. I never thought I would like any of them but them BAM one day I saw one I liked. It's a great, rugged travel watch. You can smash it into stuff, wear it diving, no worries. I have been noticing way more of them on people's wrists lately, I think they are seeing a surge in popularity.

180000000000 TY

Yeah something really seductive about every element of that watch. I like the big form factor (I am a big dood and my wrist is really far away from my face and hard to see small dials), the sandwich dial with lume underneath, the 'sausage' Arabics. The crown guard makes it instantly recognizeable.

A lot of watch snobs hate on them, and their hardcore fans claim the company hates its customers and won't just make a bunch of old school looking Radiomirs. But idgaf they're my favorite rn. Ralph Lauren once said Panerai was the best example of a rugged Western man, while Cartier was the best for a refined city-dweller.

What watches are in your collection?

Right now I have a Datejust but I want to splurge on another watch in the next 12 months. I'm only in the market for a Rolex/AP/Patek but know that getting my hands on model I want will require being on a waitlist for 6-12 months. I'd thinking that it may be worth it to wait for the market cool off, as I don't feel like paying 100% above retail for a used watch on grey market.

It's also the way they combatted fakes (the most copied watch on Earth) and artificially kept the supply really low so the demand stayed exorbitantly high.

ADs now supposedly won't sell you a Rolex unless you buy a bunch of their other less selling watches first. If you can find one at MSRP it doubles the second you walk out of the store with it.

You'll never hear Swiss watch makers complain though: it's believed that Rolex moves the market for everyone. Everyone gotta have a Sub for some reason. It's a cultural phenomenon.

I mean of course they have come up with some iconic designs but COT DAMN did they do a number on us. The inflation adjusted price for a Sub based on the 60's pricing should be like $1,500. Sure there have been advances, etc...but LMAO at it now being closer to $10,000 for no reason other than HYPE.

Is a Royal Oak really worth 20k and a Patek 60? It's all luxury goods, meng.

When Luxottica bought Ray-Bans they were selling in gas stations for $20. They took them off the market for a year when they came back they were $200. Their explanation for the price increase? "They're more detailed." It's all flame!

Which Patek. A precious metal grand complication made by hand by a highly trained and highly skilled artisan over a large $ of hours is certainly going to cost more than a mass produced machine made watch. The Royal Oak is living off it's history although pre-COVID you could cop them below MSRP. COVID really fucked up the pricing on all luxury goods.

I'm not going to dispute that a Patek doesn't go all out to craft the highest level finery. Their reputation is impeccable. My larger point is that all luxury goods have exorbitant prices, now, many times more than their intrinsic value.

I just saw a reviewer who was complaining about the finish on an AP movement and claims they're just making too much money now because it's a Royal Oak and people will pay anything for it.

AP isn't making that $ though, it's gray dealers flipping them for crazy mark ups. I don't think any watchmakers did more than a 10-15% price hike which these days feels like child's play.

Watches are subjective AF but I really do NOT care for anything Tudor puts out. In the bargain cat (under $5k) I just picked up a Bell & Ross GMT in April that I quite like, but it didn't make the cut for this summer. My next purchase will be a Blancpain 50 Fathoms, unless the DayDate or GMT Master II I'm on the list for come in before.

I want to be able to eat a steak dinner when I feel like it and take a nice vacation when the urge arises, but I can do that just fine. Beyond that, there's literally nothing that Bill Gates could do right now that I can't which would make any difference in my happiness level. Nothing.
