Doesn't this guy (young gov in heavily red state) have the profile of someone the DNC shoves down the country's throat? I had never heard of him before. I see he's a legacy and that's likely the only thing that gave him a shot, but still.

Has a prestigious background — he was the Chief Medical Officer on Deep Space Nine, after all.

He was running against Bevin who was an enemy of Mcconnell as Bevin almost beat Mcconnell in 2014. Bevin was also an ally of Bannon, so the GOP Establishment was gunning for him.

i get the history of Democrats in the south, but in the fuck in 2023 does a state that goes for Trump by 26 points vote for a Democratic governor?

Blue States elect moderate Republican Governors and Red States elect moderate Democratic Governors all the time. People understand their local parties are more isolated from national parties.

I think this used to be true and is fading. COVID policy deeply impacted people's lives and that was basically coded by party once a couple of months in the pandemic passed.

The only other governor of a southern deep red state is in Louisiana, and that guy is a Manchin-type almost-Republican. Kentucky guy seems like a typical moderate Democrat, which is why I was surprised he's not promoted more.

"Democrats" in state government in places like Kentucky and West Virginia are barely even connected to the DNC, they're old boy establishment still cashing in on the lingering vestiges of union loyalty and corrupt influence

The biggest influence that MAGA had on this system was forcing Jim Justice to change from (D) to (R) in the middle of an election cycle without changing a single policy position

The governor of Kentucky has zero legislative power. Vetoes overridden by simple majority.
