nah he was into it for awhile after his christian adventure.

his music in the 60s was great. 70s and on were mostly shit with a couple gems.

I must be missing something because I just dont get it. His voice is horrible and all the songs just sound twangy. what makes his 60s stuff so great?

he started out as a pure folkie, wrote some of the top songs of the genre, and was held up as the king and some kind of prophet. then he took it all in a totally new direction. everyone was singing straightforward stuff and he was all ramped up on amphetamines spewing surrealist americana. when most of his contemporaries were purists of one form or another, he synthesized folk, blues, rock, and country and pushed it into the psychedelic era. he was pretty much singlehandedly responsible for the next generation of songwriters moving beyond simplistic love and protest songs. he made it cool and ok to get a little non-sensical. his early folky stuff was incredible for the genre, but it became something else entirely when he went electric and surreal. and then he kept pushing it, never content to stay put regardless of how successful it was. he seemingly enjoyed pissing off his audience. he dropped out at the peak of his rock and roll fame then came back a few years later with a string of country records.

i mean this song is untouchable:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iHhWh9FtsQ

then a couple years later he's doing this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hr3Stnk8_k

then a couple years later he's doing this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhzEsb2tNbI

at 80 years old, he's doing this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgEP8teNXwY

he had a string of records from 63-68 that were constantly evolving yet somehow chock full of great songs. he was consistently great during the most important era of contemporary music. he kind of lost it after that, but put out one more great record (blood on the tracks), and had a good song every couple of years. he has worked and toured constantly for 60 years. his 2020 record rough and rowdy ways is genuinely one of the strangest most unique records i've ever heard. he just put out another one last month but i haven't heard it yet.

plenty of differing opinions on his voice, but you can't argue that it is incredibly distinct which is way more important than being objectively pleasant. there are thousands of people with great voices that no one gives a shit about.

i agree with all this but also agree with the dood that doesn't "get" his music. i can be objective and appreciate his genius, but i just don't enjoy listening to his music, apart from 10 or so songs. sonic youth is another oen - i accept that they were trailblazing, groundbreaking geniuses and their music is objectively good, but i only like 15 or so songs.

granted, the average person probably likes 0 SY songs.

being able to name 10 sonic youth songs alone probably puts you in the 99th+ %ile of modern music connoisseurs, even before giving you credit for being able to articulate your preferences in opposition to near-universal critical consensus.

Not flame I wonder if he was facing drug charges and copped a deal where he did some kind of "community service" in lieu of prosecution. Apparently this happened to Keith Richards (and Ozzy IIRC) at one point of another. They had to do a 30 second clip for MTV or something where they told kids not to do drugs. Notice how in the next cut Bob is just standing around while a dood talks about his struggles with drug addiction. It would explain why Bob says and does as little as possible. He totally fucks up that song, just wrecks it for Kinky Friedman.

MFCR

expect to resurrect? these idiots believe he never died and/or already resurrected.

it's sad because "the rebbe" was 180 and did incredible shit for saving judaism in america in the 20th century, and these chabadniks are ruining his legacy by making him the messiah.

that's the only thing CR about them. chabad events / fabrengens are FUN because the booze is flowing. if you're forced to be in a small room dancing with hundreds of hairy, sweaty men with a certain separating you from anyone with a vagina, you might as well keep the booze flowing.

litvish / yeshivish are totally lame when it comes to alcohol.
