Was Jerry Seinfeld that popular in 1985? Like would the audience know who they're making fun of, or was this an inside joke or something?

This actually makes it a lot funnier imo because you know exactly who they're making fun of. 85 just struck me as being way before he was a household name

He had Jewish connections imo. He has some kind of boomer jew aura. His show had bad ratings for like 3.5 years but nobody dared cancel him. He also fucked minors and Seduced a married woman who changed her name for no reason in 1996. Nobody cares but goy Kramer got Destroyed and Matthew Perry is dead.

Reminds me of the exec who thought “Ambon” was the greatest film of all time and demanded Spielberg be given a Director’s Chair and a Hat.

Apparently it's an error and this is actually from 1988, but it's still before his TV show. I think it was kind of an inside joke though.

I think this was 85. Wayans wouldn't have been in the cast in 88.

I think it’s 86. That’s when Lovitz joined the cast iirc. Wayans was 100% gone by 88 because he played a cop in a sketch as a flaming homo because he was pissed at the network or Lorne. Lorne lost his mind and immediately fired him lol.

Standup comedy was HUGE in the 80s, but most the acts were uneven and recycled a lot of jokes, and most were super filthy like Sam Kinison or Rodney Dangerfield.

The two standup comics who broke the mold were Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld. Both were extremely consistent and had repeating themes they used to distinguish themselves, but the jokes themselves were always fresh. The "why do they call it a [x]?" thing is being mocked here BECAUSE it had mimetic power. I've seen Leno mocked but only for the dullness of his subject matter (one impersonator made every joke a joke about "congress"). But both Leno and Seinfeld had that "the whole family can enjoy him" quality that gave them an edge when they tried to break out of standup.

Incidentally, I'm told it's always been damn near impossible to break out of standup and do anything else in entertainment, because other entertainers assume every standup comic got rejected (or ejected) by an ensemble. Also, if you're not part of an ensemble, you have nothing to show the SNL producers.

Like 1% were ever seen again after Bill Clinton became POTUS. And the biggest names in comedy are people who came out of ensembles, like Jim Carey. Even Bill Cosby hardly got any movies.

Dave Chappelle is the biggest name in comedy and he didn’t come out of an ensemble.

NOMOVIES but also his show was an ensemble. Look at who got yuge in movies. Look at the cast of Ghostbusters. The Blues Brothers. Chevy Chase did 100 million movies, all bad except Caddyshack with Bill Murray, then did more movies. What are some other famous ones?

This is also one of the few SNL episodes to feature Damon Wayans (he was on the show for part of one season before he got fired).

It's not a Seinfeld impression, they're making fun of the stereotypical hacky 1980s standup comic. There were hundreds of other stand ups doing similar observational comedy routines with similar clothing and mannerisms around that time. The show "Evening at the Improv" on A&E became very popular in the mid-1980s and featured a lot of these types of comedians.

Seinfeld is the one who hit it big so that the style became associated with him but he was far from the only one doing it.

Tom Hanks is meant to be Seinfeld in this case. He actually called up Seinfeld and got his permission to parody him and use lines from his act in this SNL sketch. But yes, there were a lot of people doing this type of comedy at the time.
