The guy who owned our house before us was a cheap bastard and used PEX plumbing. Is it going to turn my kids into unhappy, gender ambiguous blobs? I haven’t even priced out the copper replacement yet; just curious what your thoughts are on PEX.

pex is fine as long as you don't have sharkbite connectors in the walls and you don't bury it underground if you're anywhere with a rat problem.

sharkbite connectors are push-to-connect fittings with movable plastic parts/teeth inside and rubber o-rings. these can break if you (or the idiot that installed it, and most real plumbers won't install them) weren't super careful, can leak if they weren't pushed to seat to the correct depth or properly deburred before connecting, and will eventually leak as the o-ring wears out. if it's something sitting on an external surface that you can look at and go "well fuck my ass, the sharkbite is leaking" and then fix it in thirty minutes total by shutting off your main water, looking for the other sharkbite connector you know you had somewhere in the fucking garage for 28.5 minutes, and popping the fucker on once you find it, that's no big deal. if it's in a wall you're going to find out its leaking when you get major mold problems or the first floor ceiling starts to bulge. pex has two other connection types: one is a crimp connection that's basically just a metal ring that goes around the pex and gets crimped down, and the other is a connection that stretches one side of the pex slightly and inserts the other like two uncut dicks docking. which one you use depends on whether you have A or B type pex. either will last far longer and be far cheaper than sharkbites anyway; sharkbites are just really easy and quick.

i've used the crimps, sharkbites, and sweated copper in plumbing projects in my house. it's all easy. the stuff i have sharkbites on is immediately visible/accessible or underground but in an access port i can get to, and everything with sharkbites has a redundant separate shutoff. and i may replace several because i'm good at sweating copper now and have to reroute some of the plumbing in my current project anyway.

i've heard this said about sharkbites (that the o-ring will wear out) but it seems like flame honestly. have you ever seen it happen IRL with a properly installed sharkbite?

no, and i'm kind of in line with you on this, but i've only had sharkbites in my house for about 18 months. if you lurk plumber forums this is a HOTLY DEBATED TOPIC with tons of butthurt flying back and forth and the general consensus is even the properly installed ones will leak eventually. "eventually" is, again, a HOTLY DEBATED TOPIC that causes a lot of yosemite sam fuming faggotry and could mean anything from a couple years to 25+ years.

also, disclaimer: even though i will happily do all sorts of prole goy mr fix it maintenance on my own house, including plumbing and electrical, i am a bald lawyer and have no formal training or licensure in any of it.

IMO plumbers feel a lot of existential angst about sharkbite and pex. they know it makes it a lot easier for normal people to do plumbing themselves.

yeah, probably. although if normal people knew how easy sweating copper was they would do more plumbing themselves anyway. and pex crimp connections are even easier.

i've sweated joints but i'm not so sure i'd say it's so easy to do it right, in a way where the joint is durable for the long run. easy to contaminate the pipe, re-melt the solder, etc.

debur, sand, flux, heat the fitting and not the pipe, then just touch the solder to the crack where the pipe meets the fitting and it will suck right in and seal as it rushes to the heat. continuing to heat the fitting and not the pipe will draw more solder in and not remelt in a way that leaks out and breaks the seal.

Seems like a worthwhile investment. What’s the point of having money if you’re just going to take shortcuts and fuck your kids up endocrinologically (no need to respond here EPAH).

And swapping for water delivery would just swap one form of plastic delivery for another.

That's the only water my son drinks.

Casted galvanized pipes were widely used. They were coated with zinc to avoid corrosion. They only have a useful life of about 40-50 years because the zinc breaks down, the pipes corrode, and eventually begin to leak.

What is it he's worried about then? The standard home RO system also includes an activated charcoal filter for VOCs, which is the main concern with PEX. Best thing is not to use PEX for drinking water, of course. Or anything, really. It leaches a lot of shit. I'm a copper fan and that's what I have.

Surprisingly good responses ITT. OP your well casing and delivery pipes are very likely plastic. Polyethylene most likely. Go look if you have access - it black, shiny plastic. And very likely PVC supply between well and house. I wouldn’t be concerned about PEX, either A or B. It’s good quality stuff. It won’t burst if it freezes (fittings might but w/e). Pex A especially has some very cool physical properties. You can fix a hard kink by applying heat.

SharkBite fittings are a complete scam for big box stores to sell a $25 fitting instead of a far superior 50 cent one. Only thing is you need the right tools to use the 50 cent fitting.
