ok. what's your argument. mine is that you're buying something because you think it will make you happy. you're paying money to someone else for a caged animal in the hopes that said animal pleases you. so basically a living teddy bear. it's gonna get old, and one day it's gonna pass away, and then will you still be happy? will you just get another one? that seems like the definition of vapid materialism

Bizarre definition. You're bringing in something into your life for the value of the relationship. The cost could be as low as $0. It isn't a good you consume, and in fact, it is a PITA to take care of. But it is worth it because you love that thing. It is like family/friends, not the latest gadget or luxury good you bought.

it's a living teddy bear. the animals' modest mental faculties recognize that its life is in your hands, so it expresses affection accordingly, big whoop.

"it is worth it because you love that thing" you love a thing. materialism. your pet is not like family/friends. family/friends are people and have agency, and their love/devotion is meaningful because of that

inb4 Azn. Not azn

Wow. This might be the most soulless thing I've read in quite a while. By that measure, why care about kids or other people?

Materialism is all about pleasure from consumption and signaling. You have a Rolex, you're happy because you bought prestige. You buy some expensive car and you're happy because it is fun. None of that is similar to a dog, which isn't expensive and is incredibly limiting for your life but which is worth it because you love your dog and they love you back. FYI - your kid, your spouse, and everyone else in your life may well not love you in the future. At the very least, for your kids you will not be their top priority when they are older. They will love many others in their lives more than you. And that's normal. And so on. My dog thinks I'm the best human alive, bar none. That's pretty awesome.

pet owners don't have logic but at least they have "soul"

hey it's no skin off my back, some people like fast cars, some people like nice watches, some people like cute dogs. Whatever. But you dog people seriously need to get the fuck over yourselves. "my dog thinks im the best person alive" wow a literal 20IQ creature that you feed and shelter holds you in high esteem. Such accomplishment, truly a Steward of Life and Soul

I like dogs too. Had 2 growing up. But goddamn dog ppl piss me off. You bought a crated animal for companionship. Admit it. You didn't create life. It is no comparison to childrearing

Having kids has many different pros and cons. You're not going to spend 10+ years hiking with your kids. They have lives of their own that don't involve you. You might not even get along when they grow up. Even if you do, you will be a small part of each other's lives.

In any event, go live in a gated community that doesn't allow dogs. We'll never meet irl so everyone will be happy.

you really need to consider this. dogs are wonderful but they are a lot of work and severely limit your travel abilities. i don't think going out for dinner is a big deal, but i walk ours twice a day so she's nice and tired. we can't travel anywhere we can't drive to and we have to pay pet fees in airbnbs where available. and we've had to dog-proof the house to keep her from running away. it takes constant vigilance but she's a very independent breed. there are other breeds that will literally follow you around their entire lives, which has its own set of issues.

it's like a having a child that's almost certainly going to die before you do and may run away at any moment. and unlike children they are completely loveable. you are buying a tragedy.

I had a dog in a NYC apartment (who is now at the end of her days) and overall, she loved living in NYC and was fine being an only dog. In fact, she had pretty much 0 tolerance for strange dogs in her apartment. Only when she was very old did she clearly start being interested in a puppy which apparently is a breed characteristic.

That said, our house is great for her now because she has very limited mobility and at least now she can easily walk from her spot in the house to go to the bathroom in the yard and to lay outside and get some fresh air. If we were in an apartment we would have to do crazy crap like get her some cart or wagon to get her in and out (and yes, I saw people doing that in NYC). But she is 130 lbs so that is no small order.

My ideal house would have a mud room with boat carpet and a drain where the dogs could have their feet cleaned in between the yard and the house and where they could eat, and shit if needed when it's raining. They're pretty good at surviving for like a week when you're on vacation as long as there's an automatic feeder and water

its 180 million billion but when they die, your heart will be utterly and completely shredded. If you are ok with that, then getting a dog is 180 million billion.
