the spring/summer of 1992 was the decisive cultural transition point between 'the 80's' and 'the 90's.' windows 3.1 was also released in april of 1992, which was another keystone event in that shift.

the death of hair metal was actually a bit more drawn-out than modern pop-culture memoralizing usually recognizes. adrenalize was the last #1 hit, but the genre was still chugging along into 1993. eg, bon jovi's 'keep the faith' came out in november 1992, reached the top 5 albums, and spawned several radio hits.

it wasn't really until GNR's 'spaghetti incident' flopped in december 1993 that hair metal was no longer a major commercial force.

that's all it means. people ITT trying to claim that it is some super niche distinct genre of music -- like Poison had some uniquely 'hair metal' sound that was instantly differentiated from Ted Nugent's Damn Yankees (who had a #1 pop metal hit in 1990) -- are being retarded. it just means '80s era metal/hard rock that got played on FM pop radio' and stopped being played on FM radio once Grunge became hegemonic in the early 90s. that's all it means.
