Rewatched the movie "Sideways"

Date: April 18th, 2024 7:46 AM Author: Beta Office I rewatched the movie Sideways (2004) for the first time since it came out. It holds up well; I think I liked it more this time than the first time. I liked the interplay of opposites between Paul Giamatti and Thomas Hayden Church — introverted vs extroverted, ugly versus handsome, pessimist vs optimist, truth-teller vs. liar, smart versus less smart, complex versus simple, loser versus winner. It’s the interplay of those contrasting forces that drives the film. The acting is quite strong by everyone, especially Giamatti. Despite his view of himself as a good person, he's just a selfish asshole who steals from his mom to fund a bachelor party for his friend (who he genuinely hates) with an itinerary of all stuff he wants to do as opposed to the groom.

Both the Church/Oh and Madsen/Giamatti pairings made a lot more sense in the pre-social media/smartphone era than they do now. Randomly meeting and hanging out with people like that wouldn’t happen 20 years later and if Church wanted pussy he would just fire up tinder.
In a lot of ways the movie captures that last era of American society under Bush II before the decline really went into high gear. |
