i remember reading it with my 4th grade class. i found it annoying, but i was oblivious to whatever deeper meaning it had.

in my 10y/o mind, i felt like there was a continuity with all British culture that i had been exposed to at that point, mainly Lion, the Witch, & the Wardrobe and Beatles albums and coffee table books. the Victorian Bric-a-Brac magical realism of it seemed all of a piece with 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' and 'For the Benefit of Mr. Kite' and Alice in Wonderland, etc. it all seemed part of some faggy British Cinematic Universe.
