Why is Twitter worth so much less than Facebook?

That's like saying why are video games more lucrative than movies, and why are movies more lucrative than music. Because it is.
A Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran song might have a billion streams but a YouTube video that's an hour long and has 1M views made more money because people sat through 6 commercials.
Twitter simply isn't a great vehicle for getting people to click on ads. Dumb boomers on Facebook click on them all the time. It's just how it be.

This is objectively true. I know you're being ironic but it's a fact that advertisers like Johnson and Johnson don't want a product next to Pepe.
If Elon wanted a free speech platform he should have called Rach. The second you get into the business of making money then you are beholden to corporate pressures. XO and 4chan don't make anything and so you can say you love Hitler as much as you want.
I hope Elon got what he wanted because he opened the Overton window but he lit billions on fire. Probably worth it to save America. But it wasn't for the money.

on the price, we're all in a thread pondering why twitter in fact seems so underpriced compared to other large social media platforms.
on the impact, in the present day it is definitely far more influential in shaping public opinion than facebook or instagram. musk has been very vocal that he thinks right now, not 50 years from now, we are at a crisis point for both free speech and for the creation of new information tech like AI and owning twitter right now is a great human good.
just personally, the angst level among friends has gone down substantially in the last two years since everyone to the right of nancy pelosi is no longer having to live in fear of being cut off from basic communications tools for life for letting their guard down and expressing a thought online.

oh yes twitter, the basic communications tool that zozo is constantly calling worthless and useless and virtually no one here has an account on
oh dat bastion of free speech where no one engages except porn bots and crackpots on both sides

drake mallard was driven off XO by leftists, and is only able to express himself on free speech twitter.
karlstack trolls gay university admins on twitter.
tsinah's next campaign is incubating over there.

I agree that thought policing is down from a few years back, but that pendulum was clearly going to swing. Dem politicians (not necessarily lib academics or media figures) really are pretty sensitive to public opinion (think about the covid restrictions, which they all genuinely believed in, but dropped one day all together b/c they saw the writing on the wall), and the fervor toward really untoward thought-policing was really only ever allowed to get as pitched as it did because of rampant TDS.
I'm not saying elon hasn't been an important voice or that what he's done hasn't been brave: dude has been downgraded from modern-day Edison/Jonas Salk/Einstein to born-lucky crackpot by the MSM for expressing his views that shit had gone off the rails re: censorship and political intolerance, and he didn't just "express his views" -- he purchased a major modern-icon social-media company and incorporated those views into its operational policy.
But I think it'd be crazy to draw too direct of a line from that to the general softening of left-wing bloodlust.
