But I don’t think this has changed as much for Gen Z/entry level. It’s primarily a mid career and older phenomenon, because no one gives a shit about competition for entry level recruiting in a down economy. When the economy gets better it will start up again at that level and in the meantime Gen Z white dudes aren’t going to get ahead of their peers. See also, the annoyance of hiring women who get pregnant every 2-4 years for a decade and take four of their first ten years at a company as mat leave.
My other pet theory is that WFH has made a weirdly underappreciated and massive difference in gender relations in various ways that are hard to measure and appreciate individually, but they add up as you stack them. The obvious thing everyone talks about is the rebalancing of domestic labor, but there are all these other parallel things like my employer has to subtly value and appreciate that I’m willing to come into the office 4 days a week when so many others bitch endlessly, and I get more opportunities basically by default. Also my wife has a much greater appreciation for the cost/hassle/annoyance of dealing with all sort of home improvement and repair tasks. My kids are likely much more bonded to me than they otherwise would’ve been after nearly two years of limited school and social activities, which makes my wife more resigned to my durability as a husband. Massively increased real estate prices mean a much higher share of UMC and Gen X MC net worth is tied up in real estate, and no one wants to be in a position where they are forced to buy in this market. There are like 50 more different aspects of post-Covid work culture and work life balance that are subtle advantages for traditional provider bros that were under threat from 2013-2020 and are now tilted solidly in the provider bros favor. |
