it's not bad, imo, but not really to my taste. he has that tendency (commoner of americans) to avoid imagery that isn't taken from mundane life: no flights of fancy or anything to break up the arranged tedium. no color, no texture. he uses specific names and places, i assume, because he's not really evoking anything. all the mentions of korea are tiresome, for instance, because he isn't calling to mind the place or his time with the words that surround the references, but relying on the explicit reference to set the scene. far less is he doing anything interesting with the place or his experiences. it would've been better if he made up a place, left it unnamed, and explored his thoughts and feelings about it in more universalizing ways. it's about painfully specific things and yet it's about nothing. the trend is bigger than him and my tastes are weird in their own ways, but it's always struck me as if someone read frost or stevens and took all the wrong lessons, distilled them down through generations of toothless poetry, and told students this was how americans write.
again though, it's not bad, and if i saw any of it in a journal, i'd flip forward without thinking much of it at all, positively or negatively. that said, i'm glad the board has never found anything i've written. of all the things to have associated with his outted moniker, that is rather unique to him, and i imagine it sucks.
