There were also racial issues that needed to be cleaned up in the immediate post-Nam military
But at the same time the human capital wasn't that great, esp in the officer corps, even if the heart was in the right place. I think USMA took every qualified candidate in like 79' or something, guys who became field grade in the 90s and beyond |

Thankfully they had enough subsequent real-combat experience and the huge 78-90 conventional force buildup to separate the wheat from the chaff.
most of the fuckheads (draftees) were out by 76. This movie was made in 86 and is supposed to be 83. At that point you had an all-volunteer professional force for 7+ years. Most were in it for the GI Bill and/or a career. |

Date: June 11th, 2024 7:03 AM Author: Arrogant senate i think the force you note in 85' that was rock solid was the NCO Corps, particularly in the Army/Marines. the senior NCOs there were ones who had seen actual combat against decent enemies (i.e., Vietnam) and decided to make a commitment to the military.
Mattis' heart is in the right place. There's some shade about how he's probably gay but even if he is, it seems like it never led to anything (and I respect a gay man even more who rejects his urges).
At the same time, he's just not a thinker. Despite the warrior monk moniker, he just is over his head when it comes to higher level analysis of policy, politics, or future military strategy. That sort of typifies the flag officers we have now who are coming from that era
As to the leadership amongst officers (even NCOs) we're gonna get in like 20-30 years, God help us |

i have to admit i have a little bit of a bias against Mattis based on what little I know about him (which is taken with a grain of salt, as it is all hearsay from others. i never met or served w the guy)
like that incident that was popularized on Generation Kill. where he took the pistol/ammo (?) from Col Dowdy seemed like it was just showmanship. an Army unit was chewed up in Nasiriyah right beforehand; Dowdy wanted to show caution, Mattis didn't. usually these things turn out OK because our enemies--like the Iraqis in OIF--were pretty incompetent. but doctrinally, we did a lot of retarded and reckless shit, including invading with an undermanned force for the task.
IRL i wouldn't say this as its kind of a woman thing to do but it's xo so whatever. he's very good at charming the brass from what i heard. maybe thats the gay flamboyant side of him. i also heard rumors too that during his teenage hitchhiking years, he must have been groomed by some older men leading to his homosexuality. |
