Anachronistic a place this. Year by year, wondering what will become of places like this in the era defined by internationalist grandeur mega cities. The last bastions of opportunity, seemingly designed to siphon us away from here. The separation seemed slower in the 80s and 90s. Something about then was still a remnant of the history where there was a place for places like this. But it seems this century and millennia, only 20 years in, is putting a nail in that coffin. At least we have the benefit of the global lingua franca, we can thank our predecessors from the old times when nation states mattered for that. It does mean something. But what will we do? Exist purely for existence sake, of and for what's left. Until it's not left.

Napoleon Dynamite (you're OLD, released 20 years ago) foretold of this despair. You can't help but feel like you're living in some depressing alternate reality, stuck in an impossible cycle of ever-increasing irrelevance where the window to opportunity (out of town) is about to permanently close and shut you out the future. For many, it has already closed. Fentanyl has killed tens of thousands, many more are hopelessly addicted

I think the world that gave ride to these new capitals of human progress won't last much longer and there will be a return to the smaller and simpler out of necessity.
