How do you have the time for this?

Kids all grown up?

Assuming you don't work out every day, you should start doing that before starting or expanding any hobbies.

Once you're set up, it's a reasonable commitment. 1-2 hours/week in the spring, 3-4 hours/week in the summer and fall, and not a lot of work in the winter.

My kids are young (five under 12) and precisely why I am doing all of this stuff. My dad taught me beekeeping (still is) and now we're doing it with my boys.

I've worked out almost everyday, except vacation and big holidays, at 6am for the last 10 years. See here: https://autoadmit.com/thread.php?thread_id=5507215&mc=174&forum_id=2#47514245

I can purchase enough honey for multiple years of my family's needs with one hour of wages. How is this viable?

Not about that. It's a pleasure and a joy to tend to bees. I don't meditate and I should go to church more often - but that time with the bees and my wife and kiddos really scratches that itch. It's about the journey not really the honey.

What's specifically enjoyable about the bees? For the same amount of space and effort, you could have a colony of crickets and a colony of dubia roaches and breed some panther chameleons. Would probably be more entertaining for the kids.

4 acres, almost 2 is wooded.

I have a little "orchard" (few pairs of pears, apples, cherries, plums), some blueberry bushes, and 8 raised garden beds for veggies and flowers - we switch it up every year but usually tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, zucchini, jalapenos, potatoes, sweet potatoes, watermelon, carrots, sunflowers, white sage and some other herbs like basil.

Big pollinator/perennial garden that is just stunning and really only needs to be cut back once or twice/year.

12 chickens which is the most I can have. Nice mix of different breeds - eggs are white, brown and blue.

FlowHives or traditional langstroth? I’ve harvested honey with a neighbor from traditional hives and it seemed like a real PITA

ive never used a flow but their reputation in the beekeeping community is poor. i doubt someone with four hives uses flows.
